I'm new to IP and the forum! I just started on Sunday and so far so good! (Although I practically ran out of the grocery store today when I caught a whiff of whatever the bakery was cooking....just too much temptation!!)

Anyway I casually mentioned starting IP to someone who is also trying (though unsuccessfully) to lose weight and she immediately starting telling me all the reasons why it was a terrible idea and how all I need to do is eat healthy and in moderation. I was a little annoyed..... She was telling me all the things shes does and how that was better. She was also suggesting things that don't work for me....shes a stay at home mom and has a family to feed as well as herself......while I on the other hand work a lot and travel for work often and so does my husband (who I see for 3-4 days every 2 weeks) so I basically have to take care of my self and don't have a whole lot of time to do it)...... Anyway I thought it was a little odd since it was a support group and she wasn't being all that supportive!! (I am my no means saying her ideas wouldn't work but I spent the last 10 years doing that with little movement on the scale) With some of my issues (which I'll mention below) I feel like I need to take action and quick!

I was just wondering if anyone else has had someone berate you when they find out you are on IP.

Finally (sorry this is getting a little long!) just thought I would share a little info about myself since I am new!! I have been overweight my entire life. I also have hypothyroidism and PCOS which are the bane of my existence since my husband and I have been trying to start a family with no success for the last 3 years (with IVF looming on the horizon I NEED to lose a minimum of 45lbs. or they won't do IVF!). Although I have not gained any weight for the last 5 years I also have not lost any. In January my doctors office told me about IP and after a month of research decided this was my opportunity to turn my life around! I have never felt this good starting a "diet" and I am certain with every week I am on IP there will be a little less of me!

Thanks for reading and good luck everyone with your own journey!!
Hi, welcome! I don't post much on this site, but I definitely read what everyone else has to say and I've learned SOOOO much. Your post made me want to respond because till this day (over a year of being on IP) every time I sit down to have a meal or not have a meal with my friends and family they refer to my diet as the crazy, not maintainable, obsessive diet. Or as my sister use to say anyone can lose weight barely eating. What's funny is my crazy, not maintable, obsessive diet has helped me lose over 50lbs, I'm about 10 lbs away from my goal weight and I feel better than I ever have..OH and I've never kept the weight off this long. Every time they eat bad they like to take jabs at my diet, it's like it makes them feel better and I don't say a word...I just smile every morning when my size 2's zip with no problem I've tried to take the route of "educating" them on the diet and explaining the science behind it, but at the end of the day people want a reason to take the easy way out and eat fast food. Enjoy the journey you will have ups and downs but as everyone else said just wait for people to see you drop the weight, they will be begging you for your secret (or in my sisters case begging me to make her some of my yummy OP food) hehe

My experience is that every diet plan works...if you stick to it. So the key is finding the program that you will stick to. Good luck to you!

BTW - now that I've lost quite a bit of weight...no one says anything about what I should be doing.
You hit the nail on the head!! That is EXACTLY my problem. I LOVE sugar..... I'm not the kind of person who can have "just a little bit" so if I know I'll want a lot of whatever it is, I don't go anywhere near it!

I had my first person tell me that a diet that keeps you in ketosis is very dangerous. Do you think I could come up with a quick response explaining it all? I mentioned the salt, oil, supplements, but could not put into proper words the science behind it. I guess I probably still couldn't...... Even after all my reading here. haha. And being in Canada, I cannot use the medically supervised part. Oh well.

We are all supportive, so we are interested in what others are doing and supportive in any way we can make it work, not judgmental. People are curious about IP and how it works.

I don't keep secrets very well anyway so I might as well tell. And...I would also then be really embarrassed for someone to catch me cheating so there is an element of accountability about it for me.

This week we turned a potential potluck into a brown bag so that we wouldn't tempt people who have a different eating plan. We'd like to make it more about the social and less about the wrong foods! We had a lot of questions for each other about what we were eating and why. The outcome was to schedule a once a month brown bag social.

That sounds like such a great idea!!!

Congrats on your 50 lb weight loss thus far! And so close to goal. I'm very happy for you. You have such a great attitude and must be very resilient to withstand all the negative comments from family/friends. Keep it up - I know you can do it, because you ARE doing it! Jen

Just don't talk about ketosis. People who say that have NO IDEA what they are talking about. They are thinking about ketoacidosis, which is dangerous.
All you have to say is that you've cut back on sugar and processed carbs and increased veggie consumption. It isn't a lie and it keeps all the controversy out of it. Then change the subject and talk about them! Everyone likes to talk about themselves!

That's a good call. I should have just talked about that more. But speaking of the controversy why is there one anyway? I think I will go google it as pretty sure everyone else has probably gone to bed. Good night.

It's more controversy due to lack of knowledge. As Lisa said, the average person confuses ketosis with ketoACIDOSIS, a dangerous condition, even though they are totally different things.

Ketosis and ketogenic diets are actually pretty common in the bodybuilding circuits. Look up "cyclic ketogenic diet" and you'll find tons of bodybuilding/weightlifting references on how to do it.

I looked straight at him and said back "Yep, that was working great for me, wasn't it? I got to 260"

He shut up after that. I preferred him speechless than jerky.

Now I've lost 65 and he can Kiss my ever-shrinking ....

I developed hypothyroid while ON IP. I have since cut out soy and gluten because they are notoriously hard on thyroid.

I didn't tell people about IP when I started. I just didn't trust myself to stick to it. Now when people tell me how great I look and say "Keep it up," I almost feel like they really don't know what to say so they say that. People who haven't lost a significant amount of weight have NO IDEA the amount of dedication that it takes. I certainly don't need advice from anyone...well meaning or not. If I want advice, I ask for it here. From the people who understand.

ktgal ~ During my informational session, the coach said that there is a direct link to PCOS & hypothyroidism and hyperinsulinemia. IP is the perfect plan for that!
Don't worry about what people say. I've had people tell me that it's unhealthy & I won't keep the weight off. I've done enough research to be confident in the program & it will be up to me to stick to the maintenance plan that I learn when I get out of Phase 1, 2 & 3
Good luck!

Thanks for sharing this! I am actually switching coaches because the one I signed up for gave me some bad information what made me kind of sick...... and when I went to my Dr office I told them what was going on and they had me meed the ideal protein rep through their clinic and boy oh boy I'm talked to her when I did before I got really sick!! Anyway my new coach was on just leaving when I talked to her so Im going to meet with her later and she is going to go over everything again to make sure I know all the information. And since she works right with my own personal doctor he is going to monitor me and make sure I'm staying healthy!!

FYI My first coach only gave me calcium and told me that's all I needed for the first bit.....well I got really lightheaded only taking in and it interferes with my thyroid med too (which is huge because my fertility specialist wants it at a very certain level)! There was a few other issues as well but I won't get into it. Anyway I'm feeling even better about things now that I know my doctor is going to be following my progress.

This is a huge challenge for me too. I am very uncomfortable sharing about IP unless someone is truly interested, and have found most people very judgmental about it when I have told them.

I just went to a big meeting for work (I work for a medical group) and tried to accept the compliments graciously and make a sort of joke when they asked what I'm doing. I usually say with a smile -- "I eat a whole lot of lettuce!" (it's also a play on my blog, which is called Unlimited Lettuce). Some people pressed for more details and others just said nice things.

The only thing I struggle with is that the reason I found my way to where I am is that someone was brave enough to share their secret with me. I always feel a little guilty when someone asks me what I'm doing and I don't tell them the whole truth.
