KTgal, I understand where you're coming from. We have these weight loss contests at work and all I ever hear is how you just need to count calories in vs calories out. If only that was a viable solution for me, but it's not, due to my PCOS issues.

There's always people who think they know what's-what and while their comments may be factual, they often have no clue of all the context and other factors that may be involved. I just try to tune it out and ignore it, but it's not always easy.

Welcome!

I too have PCOS, hypothyroid, and I also have diabetes.

This diet was actually suggested to me (strongly!) by my sister who is an RN and manages a cardiac rehab unit. (I also have heart issues).

I have one friend who does weight watchers...she's ALWAYS on weight watchers and loses 10 gains it back, loses 15, gains it back cycle. I have maintained my weight for 2 years after finally being able to take off about 30lbs and then tore a couple shoulder ligaments and couldn't work out any longer.

IP is my lifesaver!

That friend on WW... She very much poo-pooed the idea of IP because it's not natural, it's not healthy (what does she know, she's a lawyer, not a doctor!) and that there's NO WAY you can possibly eat so few calories for an extended period of time and not go crazy and jump off the speeding train into the land of eating everything you can get your hands on.

That was a conversation I had with her after 2 weeks on the diet.

I have not had an urge to jump off the train. In fact, after 25lb loss in 2 months, the first massive loss, and the easiest I might add, I've had in years of battling insulin resistance... No way am I EVER going to jump off the train until I either reach my goal, or the surgeon says it's time for surgery (heart)...and then as soon as I can, I'm back to finish off the weight loss!

I have only told my friends and family I'm on the diet. Most are very supportive. My WW friend has actually come around now that she sees my progress.

If you're not ready to argue your point, then I just wouldn't say anything. I don't. I just really like the un-asked-for compliments when they come, and then I say, "Yes, I've lost a few pounds. Thanks!"

yes, I have had that experience as well, although not as much as the 'how do you expect to maintain weight loss on that type of diet'. Lucky for me, IP is rampant in my hospital, so I throw out a few examples of people who have maintained for 1+years and then they look at me like, 'oh, yeah'.

I was just at my doctors office yesterday and she was thrilled with the results especially since I'm officially off my blood pressure meds. The only thing she warned me about was to watch my salt intake.

Hi ladies, I took a different approach by telling my family and friends, and some People at work. I figured I needed more accountability no one has said a negative word about this diet to me (so far)
It's supposed to snow hard today so maybe I won't make it to weigh in today, we'll see.

Docs who don't understand ketogenic diets often don't realize how diuretic they are. I'm not telling you NOT to watch sodium intake but for many of us the sodium hasn't mattered that much. The only issue I have is when my DINNER is also high sodium (like ham or frequent restaurant visits).

Its really about being dedicated and stick with what works for you. I tell people I'm on Ideal Protein and its Medically Supervised. They have nothing to say after that but positive things. I told my Gyn the other day and she knew it and was thrilled for me.
Man if I could have the discipline to lose this weight with whole foods I would have! The highly processed IP foods kept me from doing it for EIGHT MONTHS after I found out about it! However diving into a box of cookies is NOT eating whole foods! LOL!

The medically supervised aspect keeps people from rendering their opinion to me, as well!

My doc had all the info right in front of him when he was being snarky. He doesn't like it when ideas aren't his. That's why he got the sarcastic response from me. It made my point and followed this rule: say what you mean, mean what you say, don't say it mean. I actually said it very straight-forward and factual, not nearly as sarcastically as I meant it!

I've had my share of negative comments from people too. I learned my lesson and now am prepared whenever someone asks me how I am losing weight. I tell them that my Dr's office has a weight loss specialist and she put me on a weight loss program. If they press for more info, I tell them it is highly restrictive...low calorie, low fat.

I find most people stop listening at that point, and just say good for you. If I feel like it is someone who is genuinely asking for help losing weight, I tell them about IP.

ahem. Really?

I looked straight at him and said back "Yep, that was working great for me, wasn't it? I got to 260"

Now I've lost 65 and he can Kiss my ever-shrinking ....
That's funny. I'll have to remember that in case someone makes a similiar comment to me.

Never thought of it this way, but it is so true.

I also told most of my family and friends and lots of coworkers. I started IP late October and knew people would be wondering why I wasn't eating certain things at holiday dinners and family parties. Everyone has been super supportive, and make a huge effort to ensure that there is something I can eat at events I go to. My coworkers are mostly healthcare providers (RN, PharmD, MD) and maybe as they get the science behind it they are better at accepting the diet. Also, as I am an RN, they likely assume that I wouldn't be following a diet that would jeopardize my health.

I also have to be very careful with the salt intake, in fact I rarely add salt to my foods. I experience extreme water retention throughout my menstrual cycle (not just around time of TOM) and had been taking a diuretic daily. That had to be stopped last month as my potassium was too low (long-term issue with the diuretic, not related to IP). After stopping the diuretic I realized that I had been rather dehydrated. Feeling great now, but any added salt really causes me to hold on to the water....to the point of being very uncomfortable.

Hello!!

Thanks for all your responses! I think I'll be keeping IP to myself from now on! When I said something I actually thought since I was at a weightloss support group that people would be.... well supportive!

lol I used to have a mean face apparently but I guess not so much anymore! People seem to confuse my nonjudgmental demeanor ( not to toot my own horn or anything but my parents worked with the mentally ill and criminals and taught me a lot about treating everyone fairly and with compassion) as a walk all over me sticker!

Anyway after I posted last night I was thinking about it and I did mention that my Dr. office supported the diet and had someone at the office (in Canada it doesn't need to go through a medical professional). She was really upset that my Doctor would be supporting something that "people make money off of". This naysayer sells that Body by Vi stuff.... Anyway I just smiled and said, "Well I like it and it works for me." Well see what she has to say when I'm at my goal!

Thanks again everyone for the supportive words I really appreciate it!

Also, one gal mentioned the thyroid and soy.....would you care to elaborate??

Just started this program in December to be supportive of my daughter -- she had been having weight issues due to Thyroid. She had been having all the Thyroid issues and tests with specialists involved -- very scary stuff. But our family doctor finally suggested she had a very simple vitamin D deficiency which leads to low thyroid problems. Long story short - it worked!! She has been taking Vitamin D supplements and doing this diet 100% OP. The Thyroid problems have been slowing fading away and the weight has been coming off. I am very grateful to this diet as it has been difficult watching her struggle with her weight and being soo depressed. I am very proud of her -- she is currently down 32 lbs! The great side result is that I also have lost 33 lbs! Thank you ladies for being here and soo supportive -- even though I have not posted I have been reading since the beginning of our journey!! It's a joke in our family that when we have a question about our IP diet to "just ask the 3 fat chicks" they know everything

Those body by vi people are CRAZY!!!! I have a few friends on facebook who've done it and post "this is great, I've lost 6 lbs this week, message me to find out how" because if they get so many people under them then they get it for free....some of my friends got really pushy...another reason I didn't really post on facebook what I was doing to lose weight...or even announce how much I lost.

I tried some at a booth once and specifically asked for 'water' as they wanted to give me milk or fruit juice. I thought I'd try it to see if it was a good replacement for IP products. I was going to try it and THEN look at the ingredients. It wasn't 'great' LOL...you need the sugar to drink it.

I do know of some people who've used it sucessfully though so I'm not going to bash it. We all have our own demons and as far as I'm concerned we love IP...it worked (is working) for us. Doesn't mean it will work for everyone.

I will tell people what I did if they ask though...generally no one really says anything negative anymore. I do hear whispers "ketosis? I'm not doing that, I'm not that *&*$ing crazy!" But no one ever says that to me...challenge me now to say that it will come back immediately

Usually I just say/said "I supplemented with protein and removed sugar." And if anyone is concerned "I am/was monitored by my family physican".

My doc was urging me to do ANY supervised diet (also I'm in Canada) because I just couldn't "do it on my own". She urged me to try Weight Watchers or something, so she's happy I'm gaining (or losing ha ha) ground with a diet...even though she has a few medical concerns about IP, so she's just going to monitor me through blood tests every month.

There is much research to suggest than soy slows thyroid function, especially in those with thyroid issues. It also can hinder the body's absorption of thyroid medicine, but if you take it on an empty stomach as prescribed, there isn't that much of an issue.

My T4 test (thyroid function) showed that from December (pre-IP) to now, my thyroid function has dropped a little (still in normal range) I am on thyroid medication and have been for close to a decade, and it usually doesn't fluctuate. On the other hand, the low calorie diet can mess with thyroid function, also, and anyone who thinks they might have issues should have their thyroid function tested. If you are COLD a lot during the diet, you should have it checked. Also, sleepiness. My first diagnosis long ago was because I HAD to take a nap every afternoon. My thyroid was not working right.

I've been trying to lose weight for years. I worked out like a fiend and counted calories and never seemed to be able to lose. My boss knew how hard I was trying but just had the opinion that it was simply calories in/calories out...Now that I am losing he says it's because I just needed to stick to something! Unbelieveable!!! I told him that I am sticking to it because it's working! If anything else had worked, I would have kept doing it but the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results!

No matter what you do, someone will be discouraging so you just gotta chalk it up to their own issues and move on!

You are on a great plan and there are so many people here that have had great success to support you! Welcome!!
