Default Other Meats?

I was given a list of meats you can eat, and some of my favorites weren't on there.Does this mean they're not allowed? Some of my favorites include Sausage, Bacon, and Lamb.Am I allowed to eat these while on IP?

Simple answer is "no." I believe mainly due to the fat content. I specifically asked about kielbasa with my coach and was told "no way."

Lamb should be ok, but no on the suasage. Sausage usually has fillers which would not be compliant. I believe bacon isn't allowed because of the high fat content.

I ate lamb occasionally on phase 1 with no problem. It is fattier than some other meats so I wouldn't do it more than once a week.

Sausage and bacon are far too high in fat to be approved for IP, plus sausages often include fillers/cartilage that just aren't good nutrition.

I know there are people who have lamb periodically on IP, so you can always try it a few times and see if it affects your losses.

I almost didn't post something because my aim is never to offend. But I'm heading for maintenance myself right now (one more week of P2 left) and I'm realizing that I CANNOT get hung up on foods that used to be my favorites. Bacon, sausage, breads and sweets did not do me any favors, and certainly did not keep me at an ideal weight. I am taking a VERY hard look at the things I might want to eat - and realizing that in maintenance they are just not worth it anymore. Will I still have a slice of real bacon or two once in a while? Sure. But if I want bacon for breakfast it's going to be turkey bacon more often than not. There are still lots of hard choices to make in maintenance, none of us got skinny by eating the way we did before.

I just say this as a word of caution - don't focus on what you can't have right now, because maintenance is still about long-term changes to our diets - hopefully we all arrive to maintenance equipped to make the harder choices especially when it comes to our old favorite foods.

Not the prepackaged/premade ones - they use breadcrumbs for filler.

If you make your own, you can't use panko/breadcrumbs or anything like that. But the egg whites are really what hold the meat together, the bread is just filler. You also want to use very lean beef or turkey/chicken.

I make ground turkey meatballs with egg whites, finely chopped celery and mushrooms, and lots of herbs. I pan-saute them in a little EVOO to brown the outside.

No problem! There are TONS of great recipes here and on other websites - if you google the words Ideal Protein Recipe and the food you're wanting to make, you will find lots of resources out there!

Yes I have made a couple different meatballs with no bread type filler and they were GOOD!

You know we had some really thin sliced ham and "fried" it up in olive oil the one night and no it wasn't bacon but it helped cut the craving!

I eat bacon if when I can find lean turkey bacon or Canadian back bacon. Both my versions are about equivalent in fat and sodium to the ham I buy.

Lamb I have once in a while too. Try to trim it up as much as possible so it isn't as fatty.

One lesson that can be valuable to learn early on is that what you ate before got you to where you are now. So instead of longing after what you used to love, find new things to love or to swap out. I don't like turkey very much but ground turkey makes a really great meatloaf, burger, meatball, etc. compared to ground beef. So I tend to substitute when I can to make the recipe a little healthier.

Calories matter.

This is why bacon wouldn't be allowed but buffalo or ostrich would.

Ostrich? Hmmm... I guess you wouldn't be having 4 of THOSE eggs for your meal! LOL

Moose, like buffalo, also a leaner meat. Never even considered trying to find ostrich
