I can't remember if my coach told me to avoid them or count them as an extra. Fyi, she advised to limit the 'extras' to 6 or less (Splenda, stevia, walden farms, miracle noodles, gum, etc).
If you are suffering from ketosis breath drink a LOT more water than you are now to flush out the ketones through your urine rather than your breath. It will pass in the next few weeks as your body adjusts.
