I had gotten from 204 to 165 on my own and just couldn't get lower no matter which plan I tried (most of them low carb). I joined IP last August and got down to 130 by Feb. This is slower than most people but IP sure worked when nothing else would.
I will warn you that people do get way more excited about the big losses but once you get closer to a normal BMI the losses are slower of course.
