Hey Surfergirl, sorry it took me so long to respond, I had company last week and didn't have time to get online very much.
While I was actually losing weight, it was easy. I think it was a combination of a lot of things.
1) I had gone from eating utter junk to really good foods, so I just felt better
2) It was working and I was so thrilled to be losing weight and feeling so successful, I wanted to stick with it
4) I was able to delay eating offplan foods with the knowledge that losing weight was temporary and one day I could eat whatever I was craving, just not today
3) I didn't eat a lot of sugar or junk, so I didn't have my usual cravings for sugar or junk
Now that I'm maintaining, it's more of a challenge. Mostly because I do allow treats and treats can trigger cravings. The other reason, sometimes I get crabby with the idea that "this is FOREVER" and it will never end and I sometimes give in to my inner 2 year. The other big component which wasn't as much of an issue while losing weight is social situations. I tend to slip up big anytime there's a gathering and wine and nibbles.
During previous dieting attempts, I thought I had to be 100% perfect at all times. So, if I ate something off plan, I just figured the whole day was shot. If I wasn't perfect, why bother, I would just restart the next day so it would be perfect. Now, if I eat offplan, I just get right back on track at the next eating opportunity. The whole time I've been doing this, I don't think I've ever had an entire offplan day (or weekend, or week, or whatever). One meal didn't make me heavy, so getting right back to it is key for my longterm success.
I eat onplan probably 90% of the time (95% of the time on a good day). After all these years, I pack lunches, make salads, try to make healthy choices in restaurants, it's a habit!
