I myself am new to this whole weight loss thing, but I have heard time and time again that those kinds of diets don't really work because once you lose the weight and stop the diet, you tend to regain, which is why calorie counting works so well, because it's an easy thing to continue to do and it's free, unlike programs like nutrisystem. Atkins is one of those diets that is a lifetime commitment as well, and many people swear by it, but it is a lifetime thing if you want to maintain.
In regards to counting calories, there are many online calorie tracking websites, including ones for your iPhone, iPad, blackberry, etc. They're worth checking into.
