Default Help** Ideal Protein says no Onions cooked?

I am new to this diet and it has been 3 days. In my packet is says no cooked onions and raw peppers, they turn into sugar when cooked too much; I made pepper steak last night with lots of lettuce. Do you think it will throw off my weight loss? Is it only men that loose more than 7 pounds in a week?
My goal is to loose 67 pounds any advice would be much appreciated

I don't know the answer to that.It seems strange that cooking something too long turns it to sugar.Anyway,there is an IP thread here under other reduced carb diets.You might want to post your question there.

I'm interested to see what other people think...my nutritional scale also says cooked onions have more calories than raw onions. I know onions can caramelize which brings out the sugar and makes them sweeter, but how does cooking add calories? I would think that it makes the energy in the food more readily available to the body...but that the energy potential would have been present with or without cooking.

I can understand how a cup of cooked onion is more calories than a cup of raw but the energy should be pretty much the same regardless. That's like saying heating up an apple makes it more calories.

I wouldn't worry, one little slip up shouldn't hurt your weight loss.

I too am confused by that statement that cooking something can ADD calories or drastically change nutritional content unless your cooking it in butter or oil. Cooking things does general deplete some of its nutrients however but I've never heard of something being more sugary due to cooking.

What packet is this exactly that said that? Is the system or diet called "Ideal Protein"?

Yes, it's a diet called "Ideal Protein". It's supposed to be available only through a health care provider. My chiropractor offers it through his office.

Onions contain some sugar, that's how they brown so nicely. But cooking them does not some how magically make them become sugar. If you enjoy onions, having reasonable amounts of them with your meals won't throw you off your weight loss.

Edit to add: The reason cooked onions seem to have more calories than raw onions is because when you cook onions (and many other vegetables) they lose volume. See food pyramids or meal plans that specify a vegetable serving as 1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked.

The way Cherry is saying it makes sense because I can definitely fit more cooked onions than raw onions into a measuring cup just because of the difference in consistency in both. One harder, one softer and able to bend.

On the other hand if you started out with 1 whole onion and cooked it vs eating it raw it should contain the same number of calories either way.
