Milk and almond shakes and stuff???
Hey all! I have been hearing a lot of you talk about using soy milk and like almond soy milk and stuff. I usually just drink skim milk but thought it would be nice to add some flavour. When I checked in the grocery store I found soy milk ones have a lot more calories and sugar. What kinds do you drink?
And how do you make the shakes and stuff?

hi there! i drink unsweetened vanilla almond breeze milk.
http://store.bluediamond.com/Almond-...ened_p_38.html
each cup is 40 calories, 3 grams of fat, and 1 gram of fiber.
a cup of skim milk has 8 calories, no fat, and no fiber.
i definitely prefer to count my calories over fat grams
i use it for cereal -- mm fiberone, but i don't really make shakes. i need to chew!

I also drink unsweetened almond milk. Almond breeze is 40 calories for 8 ounces. This week I found one that was even lower--30 calories for 8ounces. 1 cup of skim is either 80 or 90 calories for 8 ounces depending on the brand.
As far as making shakes--I like using a 1/2 pint of Arctic Zero ice cream softened and then about 3/4 cup of almond milk. I will also use fresh berries, banana, ground flaxseed, etc. depending on what I have. I just throw everything in the blender and whirl. A great SPLURGE for 100 calories(not including the add-ins)--you truly won't think you have anything "diet" in your hand.
In fact, you can use almond milk in just about anything you use milk in. It's a super way to lessen calories in everything imaginable. For instance, to make french toast I will mix the almond milk with egg whites and cinnamon. I dip in my 40 calorie whole wheat bread and YUMMO. I also use almond milk in my coffee.
You know, I will not lie to you. It took me a little bit to get used to it. Now, I do like it. I read here not long ago that cows milk was great if you plan to raise a calf but for humans there are better choices. I try to remember that one.

Great idea. Will be trying it in my coffee in a few minutes. Thanks for posting.

So a little confused? Is this almond milk soy milk? and where can I get it?
Also, it's got more calories and fat and sugar than skim milk? What would be the advantage of me drinking that then or skim?

Almond milk is made from almonds not soy. It has about 1/2 calories of skim milk. I mistakely got sweetened almond milk. Nice in coffee but next carton will be unsweetened to see how that is.
I do not like soy milk for a number of reasons.

I get almond milk because I can't have soy. They are not the same.

For 8 fl ozs,
Skim milk has 91 calories/.7g fat/12.3g carbs
Blue diamond unsweetened almond milk has 40 calories/3g fat/2g carb
Pacific unsweetened low fat almond milk has 35 calories/2.5g fat/2 carb
If you look at unsweetened soy milk on the other hand, it generally has about the same calories as soy milk but with a little more fat but less carbs (and more fiber).
You can find almond milk at lots of places, my regular grocery store carries it but Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc. Just look for the unsweetened versions.
Also, unsweetened coconut milk is pretty good as well. So delicious makes a brand but I've only seen it at a few stores and only in the refrigerated section.
It has 50 calories/5g fat/1g carb for 8 fl oz.

I've become a fan of unsweetened hemp milk. It's a little higher calorie at 60 per cup but the fat is Omega 3 and it's incredibly rich and creamy. I mix it with water to make chai when I want a treat in the evening.

Just be aware that almond milk is not fortified and therefore not a dairy serving.

Not everyone eats dairy nor do they consider it part of their diet. I personally don't eat dairy.

It's still considered a protein though right? And is it in the refriderated section of the store? I think I'll give this a try.

I find my Almond Breeze in the same aisle with the flour and sugar.
Best of luck to you on your weight-loss journey.
