Food cost-Families of 4 or 5
What is your average food cost for a month?

I have two teenage boys to feed but I would guess between $500-$600 per month. OUch

This also varies by part of the country you live in and of course, what you eat and how many meals are we talking about.
For my family of 5 which is 3 adults (my mother in law lives with us) a teenage boy and a 6 year old boy for ALLLLLL meals and all things like toiletries and cat litter, we spend about 800-1000 a month. We never go out to eat and we bring our lunches to work/school. We buy organic milk and meat and buy lots of fresh produce. I make our bread, yogurt and snack foods except for my protein bars. |
For our family of 5, two adults, 11 year old, 9 year old, 7 year old we spend between $600 and $900 on food a month. The 600 is when we are eating at home. The $900 is a lot of eating out. That is just groceries.

There are 3 of us here. Me, one 7 year old who eats more than some small countries, and a 4 year old who likes to take 1 bite of something, declare herself full, and waste all the food in the house! I added up this most recent month... Weekly Organic farm delivery (produce, eggs, chicken) $50x4 2 trips to the Costco for milk, yogurt, etc -$50x2 A couple random stops for things I didn't have on hand $20x3 so... $360? We had company a few times this month, too... so that factored in. If I add up our ages on the USDA site I get just about that on the *thrifty* setting. What is everyone spending their money on? |
Keep in mind that's an average for the whole country. Some areas are higher, some are lower. I noticed when I visited my sis in AZ that she was doing better than me on some things at her grocery. But I also know our relatives in CA do much harder than I do.

I don't really keep up with the "monthly" cost, but weekly, as that's how we shop.
Just me & the husband... $80-$100 week, and that does not include eating out. |
We are a family of two and probably spend between $300-400 monthly on our groceries. I'm really looking forward to gardening season! This will help knock down the bill quite a bit.
I buy organic on some stuff and conventional on the other stuff. |
About $360 a month for my family of 4. Me, my husband, my 6 year old son, and my 4 year old daughter. When my husband is deployed I can keep it well under $300.
|
Family of 6, we spend $500-$600 per month. It's a challenge keeping it to that level since we live in a high cost of living area as far as food is concerned.
|
I was asking the same thing not too long ago. The past couple weeks I've been able to cut the bill down to about 150 a week (600 a month). we have two adults, 11 year old boy and a dog.
|
For just my husband and I, I spend about 120-140 every 2 weeks on groceries. Lots of fruits, veggies and meats
