It's like they purposefully made Rita annoying as they could, then brought her back to normal, earlier, likable Rita for like a minute and then pulled the rug out. That last scene was heart wrenching.
I did not know that! Kind of makes me want to rewatch them and watch their interactions, see if it feels more genuine knowing that really DO love each other.
How are they? I am interested in picking them up.
I know right? What bugs me most is how out of the blue it came. They introduced that thread even before you know he was broken up with other lady cop girlfriend person. I wish they had stayed together. Would have allowed for another interesting character to develop, but instead they just stuck Angel and LaGuerta together. Meh. It seemed rushed. Hm, I wonder if maybe the other gf actress had issues and couldn't be on the show anymore? maybe that was why they pushed her out so suddenly? Anyone know?
It took me like half the season to get over looking at him as that doofy guy on 3rd Rock. I could NOT see him as the creep he was supposed to be, but once I stopped imagining him in his other role he totally fit the creepy serial killer profile!!
I'm also with the "glad Rita's gone" folks... She was so clingy and needy and just UGH. I mean, you can't get the baby to take a nap so you call your husband in the middle of the day? Seriously?? I liked her in the first season but her character went quickly downhill for me.
I go back and forth on Deb... Sometimes I like her storylines, sometimes I think they are trite and obnoxious. I don't mind her so much I guess, but I wish she had some storylines that were independent of her relationships with men. Everything about her is either her and Dexter, her and her dad, or her and her string of boyfriends. Let's have a strong female character who is continually compromised by her weakness for men! Great idea!
I guess my only concern for season 5 is that now with Rita gone, Dexter will have 3 kids of his own. He had trouble maintaining the serial killer life when he had help with the kids, and now she's gone. And surely they can't kill off the kids... and Paul's gone and can't come back to take them... So... I don't know, it almost feels like they're going to have trouble writing Dexter's life believably. What's he going to do, hire a babysitter every time he needs to stalk someone and satiate the dark passenger? That's unrealistic. And he surely can't leave them alone at night. My guess is the show is going to show him evolving away from the need to kill, show him getting over his past trauma and becoming a kind of normal person. Which makes me sad, because I like how messed up he is!
Ok, enough of that
I enjoy the books, but they're very bizarre and the show doesn't follow them. There are some similar elements, and if I remember correctly, the first season loosely follows the first book. They're two completely different things, though.
I've read all the books except the new one (haven't checked to see if it's out yet) Dexter is Delicious I think it's called. My cousin lended me the first book a couple years ago, I enjoyed it, so looked for the series online (I'm one of those people that can't watch a series, except of course a sitcom, unless I've seen it right from episode one). I watched the first two or three episodes, boyfriend got interested so he caught up to me, and we watched the rest of the season together. Then we stayed caught up with it as new episodes came up. It was really hard for us, because for our together time we usually watch shows that have been off the air for years (Homicide: Life on the Streets as an example) so waiting for the new episodes was difficult for us.
*sigh* I L-O-V-E this show!! My absolute favorite thing to watch! Of course I love the character Dexter, but I also really like Deb and I loved Arthur!
We actually had trouble finishing the 3rd season, and took a break. Which meant once we finished we ended up watching season 4 at a breakneck pace (two nights). Now I'm all psyched up for the 5th season!
Julie Benz (Rita) really got on my nerves last season ... she got so mean and whiny to Dexter but her demise shocked me! I've always wondered how Jennifer Carpenter got that "Deb" role ... I really disliked her at first, am finally more used to her now, but I think they could have found somebody better for the role.
Dexter is one of my very favorite shows ... I subscribe to Showtime just to watch it :-)

Curious to see if we can bring this post back up from the dead and discuss our opinions on the show so far. The whole Julia Stiles introduction, OMG, did NOT see that coming! I love getting caught off guard, but seriously, when is Quinn going to get the Doakes treatment and leave?
I'm disappointed with this season so far. It's just continuing on like a normal season, Dexter killing people and a new serial killer. I hope Quinn doesn't turn into another Doakes
