so.....how/why did the dog die?

i tuned in towards the end of tonight's episode and think ive pieced together most of the story but cant figure out how the dog got poisoned instead of that guy and why that guy was trying to kill himself? it seems like it was a good episode. I'm sorry i missed it. thanks!
