I don't know about buy, but the first thing I'd do is let my parents retire!
Then I'd give them the money to finally build their dream house.
And then I'd put a good amount of it in savings for when I have enough free time to buy myself a horse.
I may be naive but I would avoid paying off my parents house for a couple reasons. Mostly because they are doing ok although it'd be a nice thing to do. I wouldn't want others to know I won the money. If I told my parents, they would tell my other relatives and well I can already see some issues there. The other thing is my parents would want me to move back to California.
I'd probably do a lot of stuff I normally do which means go on trips but possibly stay longer, go more often, etc. Give money to charity but more often, more money, etc. The animal shelter has been a dream of mine though so I know that would be first on the list.
oh, this thought has went through my mind for many many years! what i would do if i won the lottery!
first: pay off my parents debt and my aunt and uncle's debt
second: build both of them houses in a woods with a pond/lake
i agree with nelie though, i know i would have people coming out of the woodwork! i would attempt to do all of this w/out anybody knowing who i was! i think it could be done! i'm pretty sure if i told my parents they would keep it quiet though.
I'd dump a giant chunk of it into the worker center I volunteer at. We do job retraining classes, resumes, mock interviews, unemployment insurance help, TAA certifications, financial literacy classes and there's a division that I don't work with for mortgage support. We're really understaffed.
Other than that, I'd buy a racehorse. I love horse racing. And I've always wanted a race horse.
First I'd pay off all my student loans and then I'd make sure my mom was taken care of - She doesn't make very much at her job, and she's really been struggling to make ends meet since my father passed away last year. She'd be so much happier if she wasn't constantly stressed because she thinks her house or car are going to be repossessed.
I'd be very discrete about it. After hearing all of the horror stories about lottery winners being stalked and tormented because word got out that they won, I wouldn't do anything flashy.
I'd collect the money anonymously, or through a trust I'd set up, and then I'd probably just tell my parents not to worry about paying my tuition or school bills anymore and that I'd take care of it. So yeah, I guess that would be the first thing would be tuition for next semester. The next? Probably camping gear that I know my boyfriend wants but hasn't been able to save up for yet.
