Actually the flamingo thing is close to true ... it's not shrimp however (since shrimp don't actually turn pink until they're cooked!).

Flamingos' coloring comes from the different kinds of algae and microscopic sized sea creatures they eat. I believe Caribbean flamingoes are supposed to have the most vibrant colors because of the types of algae there.

And while we are on the subject of flamingos, plastic lawn ornament flamingos outnumber real flamingos in the US.
