Default Feeling compelled to eat junk food that may be discontinued

I don't want to "trigger" others, so I won't mention it by name. But just say there's a junk food that may be discontinued. I haven't had one in YEARS. And now I'm obsessed. I think there are four different products, and feel this urge to get one of each--because what if I can't again?!!

This particular food, while it tastes good, is the most God awful stuff you could ever eat.

Does not mean I won't miss it, haven't had one in years, but it's an American Icon.

I wouldn't worry about it. Reports are that they're sold out almost everywhere, and selling on ebay for $60 a package.

Here's a thought: could you buy it and freeze it? That way, you know you could always have it but maybe you could avoid it just knowing that fact? I know that's not the best answer, but I thought I"d throw it out there. Also, keep in mind that all these products can be made at home.....a home version, if you will. It might actually taste better. So I would stay away.

I never liked those things to begin with. I could think of a lot better snack cakes than those things!

However, I like those Merita Lite Wheat hotdog/hamburger buns that are only 80 calories. I'll probably never find something like that ever again; everything else is 100+ calories. Pooty!

I would guarantee you could find a clone recipe for any of those specific products, and bake something that will taste substantially the same, were you to want that thing in the future. I would post a link to one such recipe, but won't to save people from having more cravings, but seriously, Google it.

I only heard about this briefly on the news today, but I think most of those items will still be available in Canada.

It is very unlikely that they will be discontinued. If the company does go under then they can sell the recipe and trademark for a fortune - and likely will. You can sleep assured knowing they will likely out live even a zombie apocalypse (even Zombieland thinks so).

I agree the homemade versions of these treats are much better. The prepackaged ones leave a funky Crisco film in your mouth, do a number on your blood sugar, and can give you diarrhea in a snap. Nasty junk that does NOT taste good enough for the calories.

One trick you can try is thinking eating one. Go through the entire mental experience, from unwrapping, to biting, to swallowing. Mentally 'chew' it. Repeat for the entire item (usually 4-5 bites). Most of the time this exercise kills the craving immediately, either by reminding you it isn't as satisfying experientially as it initially sounds, or by scratching the psychological itch of 'eating' one without actually consuming it. Weird psychology technique, but it works surprisingly well for many folks.

The shelves are empty in the stores. I have already seen a recipe to make the homemade version of the most famous one.

Hubby went out to get a few boxes for himself yesterday...sold out at 3 stores. I haven't had one in years. Ate quite a few as a kid though.

I hate these, but DH loves them. He thinks the threat of discontinuing them is just a ploy by the company to get the union to fold. He doesn't believe they will ever go away. I can just imagine what living with him will be like when he can no longer get them.

We're having a hard enough time getting Tylenol without this too! LOL

I had cravings to buy some even though I haven't eaten one in years.

Thankfully, I read in the paper this morning that the shelf life is officially 25 days, but they're often eaten long after the shelf life since the taste doesn't change for years.

That thought removed my cravings, LOL.

While I certainly understand cravings, you haven't had one in years, so what's the big deal? You've already been living without this particular treat. (If that sounds insensitive, I'm sorry, it isn't intended to be).

Plus, as others have mentioned, I hightly doubt they will actually end up discontinued.

My bet is that if you actually ate one, slowly, mindfully, it wouldn't taste nearly as good as you think it does.
