Canned lentils and chick peas!!!!!

  • I was wondering do canned lentils and chick peas have a lot of sodium. I do not want to make them and I have high blood pressure and was wondering if I rinse them off will most of the salt be gone or is there too much cooked into them.

    Thanks
  • Yes, they do. The amount will be on the label. Almost ALL canned foods contain salt. I just looked at canned black-eyed peas in my pantry. 1/2 cup contains 480 mg, or 20% of MDR. I use canned beans sometimes, but ALWAYS rinse them to get rid of a lot of salt.

You should try to keep sodium to 1300-1500 mg a day, if not less. I recommend that you look at the DASH diet. There are good resources for it on-line.

I was looking at this just the other day and found out this:

sodium free- less than 5 mg
very low- 35 mg or less
    low- 140 mg or less
    reduced-amount reduced by 25%
    unsalted-no salt added

    I hope that helps.
