Guess what I found at kroger this past week

  • I know it's not organic, but I've been buying Starfruit! Has anyone ever tried it? It's so juicy and refreshing. it's texture is sort of like an apple, but softer, and the flavor is like a combination of a lemon and a pineapple. it's also a very pretty fruit, and is easy to prepare. You just slice the little brown ridges off, chop off the ends, and then cut into little slices (which come out looking like stars!).
  • Yeah I really like starfruit. I usually see it at the asian markets around here.
  • Do you peel it? I've never had it. I pick it up a lot and then don't buy it. Is the peel "waxy"? It seems like it would be.
  • I found them disappointingly bland for the price (with a weak lemonade-like flavor). They're beautiful, so I did use them when I made fruit pizzas before I started avoiding wheat (using sugar cookie or crescent roll dough-in-a-tube spread with sweetened cream cheese and then covered with fresh fruit).

It may be that we're not getting the good ones in the midwestern not-so-large cities.

I saw some dried ones that were very tempting (because the flavor would be more concentrated), but I saw that they had added sugar, which means they're far more like candy than fruit so I passed.
  • I fondled them again yesterday (lol) and then didn't buy it.
