Mushroom - How long did it take for you to enjoy them?

  • I have always had a thing for Mushrooms. I will eat them in spaghetti sauce. I will eat them HIDDEN. Even if I know I am eating them. So I dont think I am refusing the taste of them. I am just being a 5 year old about this whole mushroom thing. I used to hate, despise cottage cheese. After trying it 14 times ( read that somewhere -14 times is the time needed to LIKE a new food)I look forward to my cottage cheese.

Does anyone 'hate' mushrooms? Did you over-come it? THey are so good for you I really want to get past this hurdle.
  • I love mushrooms because they can taste like whatever you want! When I make stir-fried veg I'll chop a few mushrooms and soak them in watered down sauce, They absorb all the flavor so it's like using lots of sauce in the dish!
just regular white mushrooms don't really taste like anything- they're just a sponge for what ever you cook them with.
  • everything tastes better covered in garlic to me.

also, you could try throwing them in lentils soup. oh, don't tell me you don't like those either! well neither does my family haha. but when i make it, i know i've got it all to myself. lunch for a week lol.

what's wrong with tomato sauce anyway? instead of spagetti noodles make spagetti squash noodles. or make sauted spinach and mushrooms. with tomato sauce or just tomatoes if you are lowering carbs.
  • and always liked mushrooms.
  • To reduce my spaghetti's calories, I make penne noodles instead. I roast zucchini, squash and mushrooms. I put just as much veggies as I do penne in my my bowl, and cover with spaghetti sauce. YUM!

I didn't used to like mushrooms. It certainly is NOT diet food, but I actually started eating them fried first. (Cause, honestly, just about anything is good fried.) After awhile of doing that, I started trying them other ways. Now I LOVE them!
  • I'll be of little assistance here because I'm of Eastern European descent, way back, and they're famous mushroom hunters. All the Poles, Slavs, Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, etc. used to drive out the city & wander the woods in the countryside hunting for mushrooms on weekends. So I think I was born with an ancestral taste for them. Mushrooms have that umami taste, the meaty savory taste. I tend to prefer them cooked rather than raw, though.

Have you ever had a portabella? Served like a hamburger, in a wrap or on half a bun? I'd experiment with that, if I were you.
  • Its been 38 years and hmmm no - I still don't like mushrooms.
I will pick them out of anything no matter how small they are.
I don't mind the taste - its the texture...all slimy and squishy its
like eating a slug. Not that I eat slugs lol. They aren't slimy when they
are raw but then they taste like dirt. Thats my one food in life that
    I just can't overcome. I'll tolerate almost anything else that I don't
really like - but not mushrooms.
  • I am not normally picky eater, but when it comes to mushrooms I am just grossed out by them! The one thing I am picky about is texture, and mushrooms just have the grossest texture (along with shrimp!). If I see any mushrooms in my food, I will pick them out! It's that bad, lol.
I don't think that will change any time soon
  • I am making stuffed portabello tops tonight!
Fat free ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, spinach and pignoli nuts. YUM!
My own version of the south beach one because they call for goat cheese and I'm not a fan.
  • If you can handle eating them hidden, then I'd say just keep doing that if it's hard for you to eat them. Just because they're hidden amongst other things doesn't mean you're not getting the nutrients from them. I personally love mushrooms. My favourite is eating them chopped up in salads, or sautéed with some garlic and mixed in with whole grain pasta. But I actually heard the best way to introduce things you don't really like into your diet is the "hiding" thing, and just slowly increase the amounts until they're not so hidden. So you could try that.
  • Well I'm 30 so I guess it took me 30 years to like them! But still, I only like them cooked, and I mean well done! I still refuse raw mushrooms and if they're cooked but only partially and still have any of that spongy texture it's a no go.

Also, I cannot stand canned mushrooms!
  • I learned to like tolerate the sight of them when I had to slice up a whole crate of them for work, haha. Then I learned to like them chopped up in my plain old rice pilaf--they add a real something to the carrots/celery/onions.

These days I like them cooked with tomato and whatever vegetable I have on hand--spinach is a favorite--and served over some pasta.
