Default making your own soy ice cream

Has anyone done this? I found a neat link that describes how, but I thought I'd ask if any of you had done it before I bought an ice cream maker.
If have done it, what brand of ice cream maker do you prefer?
Thanks guys!

I have not, but I've found all kinds of recipes online! The most intriguing for me are the ones using coconut milk and almond milk! I can't wait to get an ice cream maker to try them, or just find some for sale!

I've lost my ice cream maker in one of our many moves, I think the last time I saw it was about 5 years ago (I obviously haven't missed it!), but I have made soy ice cream. Green tea for DH, chai flavored for me. It's really good.

If you're going to buy an ice cream maker that you will use with some frequency, I suggest getting one that has a removable metal tub with a lid. You freeze the tub while empty, the ice cream takes very little time to make since the tub is so cold, and you can store the ice cream in the tub.

I just borrowed a friend's Cuisinart ice cream maker and made fresh peach soy ice cream. Each 3/4 cup serving has 98 calories and 1 gram of fat!! I'm buying one ASAP

Megan, I got my ice cream maker off of Craig's List for a few bucks so not sure how much they retail. Mine is the kind where you put ice and salt around the canister, then plug it in and it rotates. I like it better than the kind where you have to pre-freeze the bowls.
The recipe doesn't say how much fruit to put in. Does it matter? I keep making fruit sorbet in my machine but it freezes solid as a rock (probably because I'm unwilling to put a lot of sugar in it). It sounds like the soy ice cream doesn't do that?

My friend loaned me hers and she got it at Williams Sonoma. It's 60 bucks, and comes with an extra bowl, so you could make 2 batches at the same time. The bowls have some kind of gel in them that keeps them cold.
Mine came out soft, but well formed, like soft serve. I divied it up into separate bowls and put them in the freezer.
The machine was very easy to clean. I'm going tonight or tomorrow to buy one. This machine is normally 110 bucks, so 60 seems a good deal. It took about 15 minutes to make.
Hope that helps!
I just realized I can also take this into my classroom and make soy icecream for my kiddos who can't have dairy
Megan, I'm sure you can get one for less than 30 bucks at Walmart. I just think this will be a good investment for me since I love ice cream/sorbets and tweaking the recipes to make them healthier than the stuff I buy at the store.
