Rice, Rice, RICE!
 
Need help on choosing which~

I was planning on buying brown rice when I arrived on the aisle..and I was confused, to say the very least. There's white rice (obviously avoided), brown rice, red rice, black rice, even mixed rice.

Were there any difference, in nutrition (and maybe taste) between those kind of rice? Does one beat the other? And overall, which one should I pick?

I have been told that brown rice is the healthiest for you, so that's what I buy. It definately isn't the best tasting of all rices but it's okay, I usually put lemon or some other flavoring into it. I love rice and chicken/wild rice is my favorite but thats not the healthiest of choices.

I actually eat jasmine rice most of the time, which is basically white. I just cut the quantity down. I also eat a lot of Vigo White & Wild Rice. I've experimented with brown rice, but haven't had a lot of luck with preparing my own. Most recently I tried the Success Boil in Bag brown rice and it did better than the others I've tried.

I say arborio rice and make a light rice pudding. Hmmmm. Or some wild rice would be good.

Trader Joe's precooked brown is great, but I can't always find it.
Just zap in microwave for 1 minute and the texture is good.

I've had the precooked Trader Joe's brown rice, it was pretty good. They are sometimes out of it when I'm there, though... :(

White rice or "polished" rice is rice with the outer bran removed. "Brown rice" refers to rice that has not had the outer bran removed. By this definition, not all brown rices are brown. Red, purple, and black rices are usually brown rices (that is the rice bran is intact).

When in doubt, read the fiber content on the nutritional label. Because the
bran layer contains most of the fiber, you can compare the fiber contents of the different varieties. The more fiber, the more likelihood that the bran layer is intact. Or read the label for indications that it's a whole grain or unpolished rice.

As with fruits and vegetables, different colored varieties of rice contain different micronutrients, so there are advantages to eating a variety, but weigh that against the cost and the type of processing.

I buy Carolina brown rice and make it in the rice cooker..it does take it long, but I like it. I actually had some today...brown rice with Salmon. Yummy!

Uncle Ben's long grain brown rice is the easiest (other than boil bags & already prepared microwave pouches) to prepare that I have found. I cook mine in chicken or beef broth instead of water and it tastes yummy! Takes 25 minutes on the stove.

Shannon - I saw jasmine rice at Whole Foods this last weekend and got a little bit. It just looked interesting. How is the flavor different from white or brown?

Brown rices have a nuttier than white rices. Technically every variety of rice could be sold in polished (white) or whole (brown). Each variety has it's own flavor, though some stand out more than others. I have never had unpolished jasmine rice (though I would bet you could get it). It's hard to describe jasmine, it has more of a floral scent, which I think makes it seem like the rice is sweeter.

My favorite variety is jasmati, a cross between jasmine rice and basmati rice.
