I so enjoyed the trans fat discussion - can we do soy now?

  • It robs your manhood and no one’s bothering to tell you.

Now we have proof soy can strike at the very heart of your manhood.

Silly rabbits. The very heart of manhood is character not erections and sperm counts.

They sound so silly talking like that.
  • I read an article once (from a very anti-gay organization) that used this to say that feeding your children soy would end up "feminizing" them and therefore making them gay.

I think I've read the same article....silly silly silly.

Good grief! Sometimes people's thought processes just baffle me. So, then was there a follow up article that said girl babies should be given nothing but soy to keep them from "turning that way"
  • The potential health risks of eating a large amount of soy seem to be related to natural compounds in the soy plant, not a side effect of genetic modification, non-organic farming techniques, or over-processing.

I think it is generally safer and healthier to eat whole foods, but even natural foods can contain some levels of chemicals that can affect the human body in harmful ways and that's one reason that eating a varied diet is so important.

In the case of soy, there are phytoestrogens which are good mimics for human hormones and can have noticeable effects. I eat more soy around PMS time and it helps reduce my symptoms. The phytoestrogens produced by soy plants are a defense mechanism and help prevent overgrazing (birth control for herbivores).

Ever since I heard about the study that linked tofu consumption with low brain weight, I've been careful to limit my soy consumption. But I still eat it as part of a varied diet.

Well, nobody wants a fat head.

thank you! I was thinking something like that but wasn't sure anyone would get that it was meant as humor.

Dr. Sears is a baby doctor. Fertility is part of the focus of his practice.

He does make a point that I agree with. There are too many soy based additives in food. You could never eat tofu, natto, tempeh, soymilk etc. and still consume a lot of soy if you eat processed foods. So, in that way, yes we consume too much soy in the US.

Personally, I think plastics/industrial chemicals contribute more to infertility then soy. Of course, medical problems are almost never cause by one thing. There are usually many factors to consider that by themselves would be harmless, but when put together with other factors...

Anyway, I still don't think it's bad to eat tofu and other such products if you aren't eating a lot of processed foods.
  • I think that's Barry Sears that is the baby doctor.

I believe this was from an Al Sears.
  • In any event, obviously they were talking about fertility. I still thought the language was stupid. However, it was neither Al nor Barry Sears talking like that. It was the stupid reporter. But for all I know, the researcher talks like that too .
  • Interesting.
I remember watching the local news a couple years ago, and there was a story on it about how soy is turning men "gay".

Personally, I have no opinion on the topic, I don't eat tofu or drink soy milk.
However, I do enjoy a nature burger every now and then. Thats about as far as I go.
  • This may be a bit of a digression, but I bought some granules and some little chunks of TVP ( I think). I bought the granules because my DH likes lots of filler in meatloaf. I thought maybe he would really like the soy granules in it. I did't have any directions, dumped granules in the meatloaf andit came out pretty firm and dry. You are supposed to add liquid to it. Anyway, this stuff is made from soy, right? Is this the highly processed material that may not be desireable?
  • tvp needs to be reconstituted in water before using....dump some in a bowl, add an equal amount water....watch poof and then use. I had the same problems when I first started using it.

we're obviously on the same level....

    Oops. My mistake.

I looked up Dr. Al Sears and he also claims that people with the highest cholesterol levels live the longest. Um, doesn't sound like someone I'll be listening too.

I do respect the other Dr. Sears though.
