My most disgusting diet foods are things I've made myself, usually desserts. I read that you could take brownie mix and substitute a can of pumpkin for all the oil and wet ingredients. I tried this and got a slab of solid, gummy brownie ick. I also had a recipe for low calorie chocolate cupcakes that came out equally awful. There have been a fair number of dessert disasters.
I also recently made a recipe for low calorie beef stroganoff that was a total disaster. It called for reduced fat yogurt and I knew the yogurt would have a tendency to curdle so I was careful to bring down the temperature before adding it but it still curdled. It was disgusting to look at and tasted pretty bad too. That's the last time I try a recipe printed on the bag my prescriptions come in.
I think the La Tortilla low carb wraps are pretty gruesome. I still eat them all the time because there aren't any other wraps with comparable calories/nutrition, at least not in my area. And I eat flax seed bread that is pretty disappointing as far as bread goes, but it's only 50 calories a slice with 4g of protein so I keep eating it.
And I've tried a lot of really bad fat free salad dressings.
When i bake diet friendly i use Devin Alexander's recipes from Most Decadent Diet. She is a chef that lost 55 pounds by tweaking her recipes to make them healthy but you literally can't tell that they are "diet food." If you google her you can get her 100 calorie brownie cup recipe online and I make those alll the time!
I'm not wild about Wasa either (Prof. x likes them and keeps them @ work: he's been on the Atkins diet off and on), but I like Ak-maks, they have a little more flavor with the sesame seeds
worst diet foods i've tried so far: veggie hot dogs, ff cream cheese, soy joy bars, and the number one most disgusting diet food i had to throw out instead of eat was turkey bacon! oh seriously- so disgusting. why bother?
tuna spaghetti sauce= what happens when you have a can of tuna fish, a jar of spaghetti sauce and way too much time on your hands. I got the idea from an online recipe thing. Blech!!!!!
Wasa crackers - Kinda like cardboard - However the sesame flavor is gooood - reminds me of a bread stick...
SmartBalance products - mayo and peanut butter - bllmeauahhh... not a fan -
I am a big fan of Better 'N Butter - love the creamy texture - Also now that I've eaten natural peanut butter - the regular jif/skippy tastes horrible.. I couldn't swallow it.
Me too. I bought a jar and ended up throwing it away. It has a strong sweet molasses taste that I'm not used to after natural PB. It would probably work a lot better for someone who's used to the sweet taste of Jif or Skippy.
FF mayo rates right up there as one of the nastiest. And I've totally gone off of 99% of frozen dinners....
Lots of stuff I can enjoy the lf version, but not the ff. And whoever mentioned using ff yogurt in stroganoff, ewwww. I use the 98% ff cream of mushroom soup (I know - too much sodium) and lf sour cream, works well.
