SNACK ATTACK! What do you reach for?
So, I do well planning my meals. My problem area is in between when I get hungry.
I would love to hear what some of your favorite snacks are. What helps you make it through the day? Thanks! |
My favorites:
Fruit - particularly pineapple, berries, and watermelon when in season. Mmm! Veggies w/ ranch dip - I use a fat free sour cream and a ranch dressing packet...it is probably the least-whole-foods item I eat, but it makes it really easy to have crudite whenever the mood strikes. Yogurt with 1/4 cup of All-Bran or other high fiber cereal and some berries or peach pieces - usually I use fat free Greek yogurt, sometimes I use Dannon Light n Fit if I don't have Greek on hand. Air-popped popcorn sprinkled with sea salt. Popcorn is my FAVORITE whole grain. If I'm running around and in a pinch, I'll go with lean beef or turkey jerky (if my protein is low for the day) or FiberOne bars (if my fiber is low for the day). Both pack well, so they are easy to keep in the trunk in case I get stuck without a snack somewhere. |
For sweet snack attacks I go right for fruits that I keep on my counter. Or the grapes I keep in my freezer.
For crunchy, the veggies I keep cut up in my fridge. Or definitely air-popped popcorn. Topped with salt, or a seasoning/spice, or sometimes with a little splenda & cinnamon. :hun: |
Know both of these will probably sound sooooo boring . . .
Celery with light string cheese -- lots of chewing and the protein in the cheese helps to fill you up and keep you satisfied. A mug of hot or cold water with a tsp of Splenda and a Tablespoon of lemon juice for some reason just seems to take the edge off sometimes. |

I have 2 snacks each day, one in the afternoon and one at night.
The afternoon is almost always some form of latte or cafe au lait and fruit. The evening one is usually soy chips or some sort of snack that has a good balance of protein/fat/carbs (I sometimes cut up 1/2 of a Zone bar or the like if I want something sweet). |
I try to eat snacks that pack a punch nutritionally. I especially look for snacks that are high in protein. I stay away from energy bars (too many calories for too little food), 100-calorie packs, and other high-carb snacks (except for fruit).

I'm sure people are sick of hearing me talk about my best friend....the sweet potato.....BUT....for me it's the best snack of all. One amazing sweet potato will keep away hunger for at least two hours. I eat one EVERY day. I swear my skin is going to be orange soon! I should do a commercial about sweet potatoes because I do more advertising for them!!! I love you sweet potato.

BlueToBlue--The Yogurt veggie salad recipe sounds really good. I can't wait to try it. It includes so many of my favorite things! Thanks!

I need to know more about these wraps. Are you using a tortilla? I don't care for them raw.
Hmmmm. Lots of food for thought in this thread. |
I LOVE kiwi berries! They're about the size of a grape, but taste just like a sweet kiwi, with no fuzzy skin (you eat the whole thing).
Marcona almonds are another favorite of mine. They don't have the skins, are thin and crunchy, and a small portion along with cheese or fruit makes for a filling and satisfying snack. Whole grain toast with natural peanut butter - comforting and yummy. I also love "veggies and dip" - my favorites are cauliflower, carrots, grape tomatoes, cucumber, and pepper strips. My dip is usually lemon hummus, but I also sometimes make my own ranch with nonfat greek yogurt, a little nonfat mayo, and seasoning. |
