Really! Who knew? I thought they were just a cross between an apple and grape (like a pluot is a cross between a plum and an apricot). I guess that explains why I don't see grapples at the farmers' market!
I've never tried a grapple but I'm living on Fuji apples! There is a stand at my farmers' market that sells small ones that they call "lunchbox" Fujis. Each one is only about 3-4 oz--just the perfect size for a snack. I had one today that was so crisp and juicy I could have sworn it was just picked from the tree instead of in cold storage for the past few months. I also really like the baby Jazz apples that Trader Joe's sells.
But I cannot wait for the spring and summer fruit season to start up again. Just this weekend I was dreaming about cherries and apricots! I love the Fujis, but after months of no other fruit except the occasional asian pear, I'm ready for something new.
