Default Grapple- made from the best stuff on earth

Grapple--- Looks like an apple, tastes like a grape-apple. Fabulous. One of the best things invented. I don't care if I grow five ears as a result of the genetic mod that must have gone on. It is that good. Yum.

Grapples aren't actually genetically modified - they are Washington fuji apples soaked in grape flavoring.

I hate the concord "candy grape" grape flavor, which is probably why these grossed me out when I saw them.

That being said, I think they're actually not a terrible idea. There are so many people (my husband included) who refuse to eat more than a few fruits and vegetables. If a little bit of artificial flavoring makes fruits and vegetables more palatable to more people, I think it's a good thing.

Maybe if they were soaked in plain old grape juice, but the thought of deliberately sucking down large amounts of artificial grape flavoring (maybe bad childhood memories of grape flavored Hubba Bubba bubble gum?) makes me feel kinda bleh.

I bought these the other day...the only thing i don't like is that they are a bit pricey...but i LOVE the smell (my favorite fruit is grapes) - and I had one of these today for my snack along with some string cheese - oh was it yummy!

They are also more um......kinda juicy and crisp than "regular" apples (of any variety that I have tried) and they are very very good and not too fake grape flavory at all, like like a really great apple flavour with an added bonus fun flavor.
Actually, they might be a good idea for kids who don't like fruits and veggies too much. (And I speak from experience because I have, after all, had a verrrryy long childhood. In fact, it isn't over yet. ).

The juicy crisp thing is true of regular Fuji apples too. I've become an apple snob! I can't even stomache a red or gold "delicious" apple anymore, because I love the juicy crisp varieties like Fuji, Braeburn, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp (probably my favorite, but they were selling for like $4.00 per lb at Walmart, yikes), Cameo, Royal Gala, Pacific Rose, Courtland, JonaGold....

Yep Fuji's are the best year round apple, other varieties are best in season. Red Delicious are just gross.

Grapple scares me.

Really! Who knew? I thought they were just a cross between an apple and grape (like a pluot is a cross between a plum and an apricot). I guess that explains why I don't see grapples at the farmers' market!

I've never tried a grapple but I'm living on Fuji apples! There is a stand at my farmers' market that sells small ones that they call "lunchbox" Fujis. Each one is only about 3-4 oz--just the perfect size for a snack. I had one today that was so crisp and juicy I could have sworn it was just picked from the tree instead of in cold storage for the past few months. I also really like the baby Jazz apples that Trader Joe's sells.

But I cannot wait for the spring and summer fruit season to start up again. Just this weekend I was dreaming about cherries and apricots! I love the Fujis, but after months of no other fruit except the occasional asian pear, I'm ready for something new.
