Yoga DVD's

  • Can anybody suggest a good Yoga DVD for beginners? I have never attempted to do yoga but I really want to get into it.
  • If you are a total beginner, and have never been to a class I recommend:

Yoga Journal's "Step By Step" dvd series. (They have 1, 2, and 3)

Google it...you can buy them on eBay, Amazon, and from Yoga Journal's site.

They are fabulous, because they give much more info on proper form. I would avoid anything by Kathy Smith, Denise Austin, or anything put out by general fitness instructors or celebrities if you are new to yoga. Proper form is important to avoid potential injury.

Start with volume 1, and when you have mastered all of the poses, go on to Volume 2.

I also recommend "Introduction To Yoga" put out by Yoga Zone. It gives nice tips on form as well.

(I am adamant in having yoga dvds by real yogis, not celebrities or step aerobics instructors...)

Also, be sure to have a yoga mat, a yoga strap (or a belt), and 2 yoga blocks for most dvds. The last two things will help you modify positions if you need to.
  • I'm not familiar with intro to yoga DVDs but have a few advanced beginner/intermediate DVDs and have recommitted to attend a live yoga class once a week.

If you can find a live intro class i'd highly recommend it. Just as aphil said - proper form is really important to avoid injury and to get the most from yoga.
  • I like Gaiam's Yoga: Conditioning for Weight Loss. It has 4 views, beginner thru advanced for each pose. You can watch whichever one you like, or all 4 combined.

Suzanne Deason really has nice videos, and her narration is very good for someone that has not done yoga before.
  • I second Yoga Zone pic... they are great, especially the ones with Alan Finger.
  • i agree with countingdown: gaiam yoga dvds for the win!

they have one that is called AM/PM yoga, and both the workouts are very streeeetch-intensive, which is easy for beginners to pick up. i have also found that as i have gotten better and better at yoga, i can make those workouts EXTREMELY hard. so, this DVD has some staying power, too, which is good for the $$ sitch.
