Okay, I've decided I'd like to start running/jogging, but I need a little help!
Can anyone recommend what type of shoes I should wear? Are certain brands better than others? I don't want to pay store prices for shoes, so I think I'll try some on, find a pair I like, then look for them on ebay.
What type of clothes should I wear? Just something that wicks sweat? I think I'll just look at Wal-Mart...
I'm going to do the couch to 5k program. I looked it up and it doesn't look too hard. Do I only need to run 3x a week? I already walk in the mornings, so I was going to replace my walking with running, but I don't want to injure myself.
I already exercise moderately, I walk, bike and strength train, but it doesn't seem to be enough. So, I think I'd like to run and do my strength training as my regular exercise, and just walk and bike whenever I feel like it. Does this sound ok?

I couldn't say what kind of running shoes to wear as that varies from person to person, but you could check out this link to determine your giat http://www.running4women.com/starting_out.php?subid=1, your gait will determine whether you need a shoe for stability, cusioning or motion control or better yet go to a store specialized for runners and let them watch you run on a treadmile to determine the best kind of shoe for you. I got a pair of Nike's that are great stability shoes for $60Can at footlocker, so store prices might not be that bad.
I suggest that you do run every other day, i used to walk before i ran and thought i could handle running every day but i got horrible shin pain(called shin splints). So you could run one day and walk the next, follow the couch potato to 5K it will make a big difference and prevent injury and burn out. Also follow the stretched they recommend before and after each session.
Walmart does sell some good wicking t-shirts and sleeveless shirts i got a few for $7 Can so they should not be too expensive in the US.
You can join the Coolrunners thread there are many experienced runners there who could give you more advice, I'm just a novice.
I have decided the same thing. The aerobics just doesn't seem to be getting it done and i'm getting burned out. . .so i think i'll alternate and do the aerobics on days i don't run. . .but i'm new to running so i'm trying to figure out where to start. . .I did manage to find some running sneakers at Kids FootLocker on sale for 39.99 the same ones are on sale in Lady FootLocker for a few dollars more. I'm 5' 5" just turned 26. we are in the same boat weight and goal wise it looks like. . .has running been the only thing you have tried exercise wise?
KSansha- Welcome and good luck. I think that the Couch 2 5k program that Josie doing is a great way for beginners to start. The program is on the coolrunning.com website if you are looking for one.
Josie-I know that fronting money for shoes is vary hard, but definitely worth it. Good shoes will protect you from injuries and save you a lot of hassel in the future. Plus, you will wear through them more slowly so your money will last longer. I like the suggestion of going to a running store to find out what kind of shoes you need. You don't need to buy them there and it is the easiest way to get the right shoe for your foot type. And really they don't have to be expensive. I don't have any special shoe needs (luckily) and just bought a pair for $70.00 that are considered one of the best pairs out right now. Even going for a moderate shoe you shouldn't have to spend that much. As far as the brand of shoes there isn't just one or two. Most brands have several decent running shoes and it will depend of your foot type.
You definitely only need to run 3x per week. Especially in the beginning. If you walk everyday I would just continue doing that on the days you aren't running. If have been running for several years and still only run about 4x per week.
As far as clothes. Wicking clothes are great, they really work and if you are running in warm weather a lot much more comfortable. However, I feel they aren't necessary for running (better to spend the money on shoes). I have some wicking clothes that I save for hot days (and reversely some in the winter is save for really cold days) but for the most part I just wear shorts and tank tops/t-shirts, etc. A good rule of thumb is it generally feels about 20 degrees warmer when you are running, so that is how you should dress. At this time of year I try and run in the morning before work or after 5:00 to have cooler temps. Since it looks like tou will be running in the morning that shouldn't be a problem for you. Suprisingly the days that are hardest are not the hot ones but the humid ones. I would suggest just trying out your regular work out clothes for now to see how they work for you. Plus, that way you can avoid spending more money until you really find out whether you like running or not. Although I am sure you will.

Don't get discouraged with it if you start to have problems. They can generally be corrected.
When I first started running, I couldn't go very far without getting totally out of breath. I had to walk awhile then run just a bit, alternating, until the distance I ran began to increase over time. It went from something like 15 feet to breathlessness when I started to 3 miles a day. LOL
I also went through shoe after shoe. If you have access to a treadmill, the store will generally allow you to return them as long as they haven't been worn outside. So I tested many pairs. After I bought a pair of running shoes and started running, I had problems with blisters and corns. These were most likely also caused to some extent by my wearing normal socks. So I bought Thorlos running socks to keep moisture away and started trying new shoes until I found a pair that felt comfortable while running, didn't leave my feet tired, and didn't rub blisters. Those ended up being a style in the Saucony's from Lady Footlocker.
I also have a problem knee and after running for awhile, it started acting up, so I bought some generic knee supports from the pharmacy and wear those when running to keep the pressure off my knees. It works.
So if you experience these problems or others, check in with other runners and try other equipment. You may just be landing on your feet wrong, trying too hard, working on a non-runner friendly surface, or just not have the proper equipment. And all of those can be corrected with patience.
I started out doing aerobics and ab exercises at home with a tape that was during the winter, I did not see much inprovment in my whieght so i started walking when spring came, then walking was getting boring so i started running in June, started the couch potato tp 5 k program 2 weeks ago.
My essential list (in order): good shoes that fit your biomechanics (go to a good running store), supportive running bra, good blister-free socks that complement the shoes' fit and function, and compression shorts or tights in winter. If you have money left over, consider wicking fabrics on the other clothes. Other supplies you might need: sunscreen and Body Glide/vaseline. Nice extras: sunglasses and hat.
I don't know what body type you have, but almost as important as running shoes is getting a decent running bra. Worth spending a bit more and getting a good one, if that is an issue for you.

Thanks for the info everyone! It really helped! I've been reading a book on running(Complete Book of Women's Running by Dagny Scott) and I really like it so far. I think running is an exercise I'd like.
I have about $120 to spend, and possibly more depending on when I work next. I'd be willing to pay up to $70 on shoes, so that'd leave about $50 for everything else. I'll look for socks, clothes and a bra at Wal-Mart.
My current bra is too big, so I know it wouldn't work for running. I'm not even sure of my size anymore. I think I'm a 34 or 36 B or C. I haven't tried on bras in ages! My current bra is a 38 C and it's just too big. I'm self-concious about my boobs bouncing, so I'd get something very supportive.
About shoes, I'll just have my grandma take me too the mall here within the next week and I'll look around for shoes. I don't think we have any stores that specialise in running equipment, though.
I have some spandex shorts and tank tops that I work out in, but I don't want to wear them for running. I don't really have anything else, so I'll look for some wicking clothes at Wal-Mart.
I don't even know when I can start running. My parents are busy, so they can't take me to stores, and my grandma's out of town right now. I guess whenever she's back I'll ask her to take me to the mall and Wal-Mart so I can buy the equipmentI need.

Hello there! I've been doing the Couch to 5K program since April. I am just now doing 3 miles.
Good shoes make a HUGE difference. I went to a specialty running store and all they did was watch me walk a few feet to see what kind of shoes I needed. I spent about $90 but WELL worth it. I had been running with shoes that were just not for me, and they started to make my hips become painful. So, it really depends on the person as to what brand is better.
Good bra is definitely important. Ennell has some good bras for the well endowed. Also, Champion are pretty good (that's the kind I have)
As for clothes, I just wear sleevless shirts and some shorts from Target..
