Default Target Heart Rate???

Someone in the know...... Target Heart Rate.... I know what mine is, but no matter the exercise I am doing, I usually end up way above my target. If I slow down, I don't feel like I am being effective. How important is exercising in the target range? Am I hurting/hindering weight loss by going above it? Is it unhealthy? I have tried looking online but can't find an answer that satisfies me.

I pay no attention to it as it is distracting and psychologically offputting. I work out as hard as I can and use my body to tell me when enough is enough. If I had a heart monitor bleeping 180 beats per minute at me on my runs, no way would I have learnt to run as fast or for as long.
