Unhappy Running support

So, I thought I would see if I am not the only one concerned for getting up and running. Short story, I have never been able to run for more than 2 minutes my entire life, I kind of blame my asthma for it, but it may also be partly me being out of shape. However, one of the career paths that I may take I can potentially be in the army, so I would have to qualify for their 8 minute mile standards as well ask keep up their PT every week. So...I was wondering if there was anyone out there that has not been able to run before, but now is in a running routine and it isn't a problem anymore. I have three years to be able to get up to that standard. I have been out of an exercise routine for a while now, trying to get back into one. I have downloaded the Zombies! Run 5k app, which I have only done 2 days worth. I believe I did 2-3 weeks worth of the C25K until I ended up with shin splints and stopped. I had a discussion with my parents and my dad believes I can't do it. So here I am trying to find the support I need to motivate me to get up and get moving. My boyfriend has two sisters who run, I was thinking about talking with one of them to see what I can do to get me where I need to be in the next three years.

i also run with asthma...make sure your inhaler is around...ive been running for over a year but i still do intervals of walk, then run, then walk again, because of the asthma...good luck!

I have several friends who run with asthma. Everyone is different but yes, I think you can do it. My best friend (who is my running partner) added swimming to her workout to focus on her breathing and improve her lung capacity.

i did couch to 5k and started at over 300lb i couldn't finish the first time i tried to jog for 60s.

Get 2 pair of shoes and wear a different pair each session, do the C25K if you need too take a few breaks i took a break in week 5 and week 7. i went back and did the previous week again when starting out.

Change your running shoes every 6months at the VERY MAX prefereably more often.

I can now do 5-6miles without stopping. and its been under 12 months since my first day on C25k, i've done over a dozen timed 5k's my best time is now just over 33mins and i'm hoping to break the 30min barrier this summer.

Asthma can control your life if you want it to, or you can refuse to be boxed into a life by something. Google elite athletes with Asthma and you'll be surprised at some of the big names you'll see worth class marathon runners included.

I have asthma and have run half marathons as well as 8 min. miles - stick with it! The key is to find a good plan you can stick to and go from there. Listen to your body and take your time building your endurance/stamina.

I believe you can do it too, but you'll have to start slow. Work your way up to running 2 miles before you start working on speed at all. Then once you can do 2 miles work on doing speedy little intervals here and there, increasing the speed until you are doing at least the first mile at 8min/miles or less...You can do this!

Thanks so much for your suggestions and shared experiences! I hope to be able to use some of the suggestions to help me become a better runner. I know now that it isn't impossible
