When I did CrossFit we often did tabata workouts. It is intense! You have no idea how a 16 minute workout can be that effective, but wow, it is hard. I think it's a great way to vary your training. HIIT is fabulous for burning calories and has a greater after burn than steady state cardio. I also love that it incorporates both strength and cardio elements. It's very time efficient.
If you do tabata right you will surely get a great workout but remember, it's short, so there's no half-a**ing it! I also probably wouldn't do it every day. It's a great way to mix things up though.
