Working out early..like really early.

  • I'm a busy person. I work full time, go to school, teach yoga, and am married. I don't have time to workout after work. A few months ago I started to wake up at 5am for my workouts. At first, it was hard. I wanted to cry when my alarm clock went off. However, soon the benefits started to really pay off, and I was feeling GREAT after my workouts. My whole day would go in a completely new direction. I was full of energy, thought more clearly, and didn't have any distractions to keep me from working out. Now I love it. In fact, on the weekend I end up waking just as early because I'm so used to it. I can just feel my metabolism working faster throughout the day.

Anybody else as crazy as me?
  • I've been losing weight for a few weeks now and want to begin adding exercise in February and was just thinking of when I'm supposed to do this, am or pm..

How long do you exercise for in the mornings? An hour?
What types of exercise do you do?

Another factor for me is if I'm exercising indoors I can't do it too early or too late, because it will annoy the neighbors (live in an apartment)
  • Waking up 5 am ??? That would be a nightmare. I have trouble waking up at 7 or 8! What time do you go to bed at night?
  • This autumn I regularly woke up at 6:30 in the morning to go out for a little run, anything between 12 and 45 minutes. Sometimes it would be really hard to do, especially in the beginning, but it payed off well! And each and every time I was energized for the whole day. Now in the winter I can't motivate myself to go out for a morning job when it's -20C outside, but I still have the habit to wake up around 6:00 or 6:30. It takes time to build new habits and then it takes time to get rid of them too, hehe I really should start filling my morning hours with exercise again - now I just prepare my lunch for the day, so I still use the time to make my life healthy.
  • I am a morning person, and no matter what, I'm up and out by 5:30. Every day, I walk my dogs at that time. If I go to the gym, my alarm goes off at 4:55, and I'm out of the house by 5:15 (& walk my dogs when I get home). I do all this before I've had my first cup of coffee.

I love the really early morning because it's quiet and peaceful. Also, in terms of consistency, for me it's easier to consistently exercise in the a.m. because life usually doesn't get in the way at that time. If I wait until the afternoon, other obligations might pop up that will make it difficult for me to work out.
  • I used to be a morning person, then became an evening person for a few years, and now I'm back to enjoying the mornings, courtesy of my 6 a.m. fitness classes. I work from my home, so have the luxury of taking a nap if the urge hits. If I didn't, I might shy away from early-morning workouts as I do have a prounounced drowsy period a few hours after exercising.

  • I got up at 5am for years when the kids were small... I would get up at 5, have coffee, get to the gym for 6, then back home for 730 before hubby went to work... It's very doable and not crazy at all
