Default Is it harmful to run on sidewalks?

I've heard that running on sidewalks is the worst thing to do because blacktop is a little softer and wouldn't be so hard on your joints. But, the subdivision I live in is extremely busy: cars parked on both sides of the road, people who don't drive 25 mph, etc. I don't mind running on the road when it's earlier in the morning or later at night, but tonight I might have to run when it is "rush hour" of people coming into the subdivision from work and I flinch sometimes wondering if people are going to see me.

So, is it that bad to run on sidewalks or will it cause injuries? Are there any runners who run on sidewalks and find that it has not had an adverse affect on their bodies? Oh, and I only run 2 miles as of right now, so I'm not doing a ton of mileage.

I normally run in the early morning hours on the road against traffic because like you I heard that cement (sidewalks) is killer on your knees. But if I have to run at night, it's sidewalks for me due to the busy hour. Hope this helps.

I've run on sidewalks and haven't noticed any trouble. I also don't like running on the road so stick to sidewalks or parks.

I can't run on cement two days in a row-- it hurts. Asphalt, no problem.

Would reflective gear make you feel comfortable running in the road?

I wonder if some nice shoes would help prevent the force from rebounding on your joints?

Not if it is busy hour on the roads, but it might be something I'll consider for early morning or late evening runs if I am able to run in the road.

I have two pairs of brand new running shoes, so I'm hoping they'll help.
