Beginning Runners Weight..GAIN?

  • Hopefully someone can answer my question & calm my anxiety!

I started my diet at the beginning of last month via Medical Weight Loss (here in Michigan) & have lost 11 pounds without exercising, however, common sense told me that I could lose more weight if I used the treadmill sitting in my living room. It's been four days and I've put on TWO pounds just from running/walking in intervals. It's scaring me to the point where I'm going to stop running until I realize where this weight gain is coming from.

By the way I track my calories on an Android application on my phone & I'm definetly NOT overeating. I drink water, diet tea and limit my carbs as well as incorporate plenty of fruits and veggies into my diet. In fact, I'm eating the same portions that I ate before.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of weight gain?!?!
  • Oh yeah. Whenever I start up the intense exercising, my entire body swells up like a balloon and I end up gaining 5-6 pounds. So I never weigh myself in that first week. In my experience, give yourself about 10 days to de-swell before worrying
  • How many calories are you eating each day? How many are you burning on your workouts? Could be two things IME: needing to up your calories a bit on days you workout or just giving it a couple of weeks for body to adjust to the new activity level.
  • If you haven't exercised in a while, especially, it's just your muscles retaining water. They are repairing themselves from all of the new activity they're donig lately! It's prefectly normal. Just make sure to give yourself a rest day here and there to give your body a chance to adjust. Exercise WILL hel you lose weight. Not just the calories you burn while exercising, but the calories you will burn just sitting around because you have new, lean muscle!
  • Thanks for responding ladies. I'm eating about 1300 cals a day. I'm only 5'3 1/2 lol. I'm definetly going to give my body a rest & let it adjust. I'm sore as **** =/
  • maybe its the muscle gain? but might be a bit too fast for that
