Is there anything anyone does while theyre at work to help burn some calories while sitting all day?

I know for me I get up and walk around at least once an hour- even if it's a quick lap around and just 2 minutes. Helps me from cramping up and getting too stiff also.

generally I try to walk for at least part of my lunch break. This week though no one available to cover for a break and my body is screaming for movement after 9 straight hours at the computer.

Ditch the chair and get yourself a stability ball. You can get them for like $8 at Target or Walmart. Just be sure to get the proper size for your height - just go by whatever it says on the box. It's a great way to burn calories while sitting! It will also help improve posture - and you know what they say right? Something about how proper posture can make you look 10 pounds thinner or something like that?

I sat at a desk for over 10 years. Changed careers. I'm a personal trainer - which means I don't get to sit. Ever! I can put an average size man on my back, squat, get up, and do that oh about 10 times or so. Rest and repeat.

I've been working on a couple of websites for the past few weeks - which requires waaaaay too much sitting and I end up sore and stiff. After a few hours I can barely move. OK well, I'm old too. But still - it's physically more painful than my most intense workout! Sitting for long periods is killer on the body - so much so that you'd think it'd burn more calories than it does!

Oh or you could try those pilates resistance bands for while your at your desk. There are some upper and lower body things you could do. Really though, make sure you get up every 20 minutes or so to stretch if you can - not for the calorie burn but simply to save your back, neck, knees etc. Too much stiffness/tightness usually leads to things like back, hip, neck, and knee pain.

My back (and chiropractor I'm sure lol) thanks you for this! You reminded me that I keep meaning to ditch this chair!!! I've got a stability ball downstairs I keep forgetting to bring up here!

Answer one email the usual way, then get up and deliver 2 by hand. Make rounds in your building by visiting everyone and finding out how they are doing. Try to drink loads of water and use a bathroom on another floor. Stand up and do 5 push-ups against your desk's edge every hour....

I eat at my desk for lunch and use my lunch hour to go walking around the city. I get about two miles in during that time (considering I'm waiting to cross intersections, people getting in the way, etc.)

I also retired my car (during the week- saves gas) and take the bus and train to work. I get off two stops earlier to walk additional five blocks.

Too bad they lock the staircase (except during emergencies), so I'm forced to take the elevator.

You can do an amazing amount of squats during the day at your desk.

Also - it doesn't burn many calories, but be sure your posture is good. Really stretch out your spine, out of your hip sockets. Sitting there with your shoulders back, abs sucked in, just makes you feel like you are doing something.

And, like others have said, take the stairs, park in the farthest spot from the door, and walk, walk, walk.

I know it might not be while you are sitting there. But actually take the stairs instead of the elevator for once. It kept me moving and walking up 15 flights of stairs was a great early morning workout.

I always put my water in a small cup so I have to get up more often to refill it..then when the weather gets warming I always go for a walk on my lunch break. Other than that, I tend to park farther away and try to get up to tell people things instead of emailing them.

I have a chair that rolls so I push myself back and forth away from my desk without using my feet. I feel my arms and abs working so I know it does something. I second the idea to stand up and do standing pushups against your desk. I'm in a cubicle but I have realy high walls and there is no one around me really so there is a lot I can do at my desk.

Not much of a workout, but I make it a point to get up every 1/2 hour to stretch and take a short walk. Really helps with the back which gets sore if I sit too long.
