Hello, i usually haunt the UK Fat chicks sub forum, but my fellow 3fc boyfriend recomended i come here and talk to Meg and Mel. I don't know who Meg and Mel are but if you are Meg or Mel please introduce yourself. I will appreciate help from anbody else as well. I have just joined my local gym but being a student will be leaving again in september. I need to lose 2.5 stone to be my optimum weight, what is the best exercise to do for this, i hate bikes and cross trainers and i don't have access to a swimming pool. Treadmills i will do but usually only brisk walk, cos i can't run for more than a few seconds without gasping for breath. And can you recommend any exercises to do when i go back to uni where i can't afford gym membership.

I'm Meg, nice to meet you. The best exercise program for fat loss is one that includes both cardio and strength training.

Cardio is any exercise that raises your heart rate for a sustained period of time, so that would be your treadmill, elliptical, stairstepper, walking, running, swimming etc. It doesn't matter which piece of equipment it is (or no equipment if you're walking or running), just as long as you elevate your heart rate. Cardio will be your main calorie burner and will strengthen your heart and lungs (cardiovascular system).

Equally important is strength training (weight training, weight lifting etc). It's very important to maintain and build our muscle mass while we're losing fat. Muscle is the furnace that burns calories, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn -- awake or asleep, 24/7/365. Muscle will also keep your metabolism elevated so that you can lose fat and maintain at a higher calorie level. And it will ensure that you get to goal in a smaller, tighter body.

So my suggestion is to find a kind of cardio you like (walking on the treadmill is fine so long as you're elevating your heart rate) and putting together a strength training program using the equipment in your gym. As for when you go back to school in the fall, do you have access to the school's gym?

Sorry its taken so long to reply. Back at uni now and not really losing weight. I sort of gave up the gym cos i was not feeling motivated at all. The uni gym is a nightmare cos we are not allowed in when the public are in there and getting to college costs fortune. My boyfriend has given me some weights (funny things that you can velcro around your wrists and ankles). Any little exercises that i can do at home in my room, when i don't have alot of time. Also any motivational ideas.
