Excersing with a hurt foot and knee
Hi All,
I recently starting running, which I hate but I get such a good workout. It gets me excited to go to the gym. The sweat just pours off of me. But I recently hurt my left knee and right foot (at the same time no less). Its been like this for 1.5 weeks and I thought the pain would subdue by now but it hasn't. I finally made an appt with an orthopedic doc. Anyways I want to continue my workout and not being able to run has crushed my workout. I get on the elliptical machines and arc trainer but I cant get my heart rate up and I dont sweat. My gym doesn't have a stair climber. Any suggestions on machines would be greatly appreciate. |
Rowing machine always sky-rockets my heart rate, although I'm not sure how it would treat your knee. Also, maybe try the eliptical at a high incline and do interval training with it, go hard for 2-5 minutes, rest for 30 seconds to 2 minutes, and repeat for however long your on the eliptical for. Try the same intervals with a stationary bike as well.

If you push hard enough with intervals you should be able to get a good sweat on on any machine.
I second the rower - it can be a real beast. |
Thanks guys. I tried the rower tonight and LOL I wasnt sure if I was doing it right so I got on youtube and watched some good techinques. I will be doing the row machine for awhile.

I hurt my knee (runner's knee or patella femoral syndrome) back in October and just this month was finally able to start running again. Because I continued to run on my injured knee for a while, I ended up injuring my ankle as well. My ankle healed a lot faster than my knee; I had to stop all running for eight weeks while my knee healed. Here is what I did while I couldn't run:
I also continued to do weights and did the exercises my doctor recommended to strengthen my leg muscles (although I had to significantly increase the difficulty level of all of them--they were laughably easy). I didn't do the rowing machine because I felt like it wasn't enough of a workout, but I think maybe I just wasn't doing it right. My doctor specifically recommended all of the above exercises (including the rowing machine) as safe for my knee (although she said not to do the incline walking if it hurt). It's good that your gym doesn't have a stair machine because that's probably not good for an injured knee. My doctor specifically said stairs were out. Also, I used Blue-Emu Oil on my knee and it really helped. I'm normally skeptical of stuff like this, but it really worked. I felt an improvement in my knee after using it for only a week (I applied it three times a day). I highly recommend it. I think it is the glucosamine in it that helps. I plan on continuing to use it indefinitely even through my knee seems to be completely recovered now. |
Thanks for the info blue

What level are you using on the arc trainer? I stick that thing on weight loss... level 4 and i am about to die! Lol!
Maybe you need to up the incline or resistance. I love the arc trainer to death now that i figured out what level gives me a challenge. |
