Default How effective is bike riding..

Hello everyone. Well walking and jogging is starting to get a little boring for me. So for V-Day the husband bought me a hybrid bike (mountain and road riding) bike. I will be riding on hard roads, dirt roads, trails, etc. But what I am wondering is how effective this is for cardio exercising. It has 18 speeds so I can change that to work harder if I like or make easier if I get to tired.

Biking is great cardio! I did a lot of it last summer/fall and it was lots of fun. You do need to push yourself though. Coasting around slowly doesn't do as much as cycling fast and over hills and the like.

Biking is great! I can't wait for spring to get mine out. You will notice that you will need to bike alot farther than you do running to burn the same amount of calories. Sometimes the distance thing can throw people off. I guess try to focus more on duration of biking, and heartrate.

Hi Ilene!

I can't wait for spring, and the snow to be gone, gone, gone! I have a hybrid type bike too, and I love riding for outdoor cardio.

I've heard that three miles on the bike is approximately equivalent to one mile on foot. Not sure of the accuracy of that, but it makes sense to me.
