Default Swimming?

Since the weather is getting warmer and the pools are open I was wondering if swimming laps is just as good exercise as walking? I'm not a fan of the heat and swimming is easier for me since I can include my kids.
Also does anyone know how many calories I will burn? Thanks

Swimming is FANTASTIC exercise! I don't know exactly how many calories you burn, but it's more than walking, I believe. GO FOR IT!

Swimming is awesome because you are working EVERY part of your body. It is waaaay better than walking...in my opinion..probably because I REALLY love swimming. I just wished I looked better in a suit. I've always been self-conscious about my thighs...(the worst part of me)

I went to Self's website, it is awesome, heres the link:

and it says, at your weight, you will lose 400 cals for 30 minutes at a moderate swim pace. That is awesome. But now, bear in mind, that is actual swimming, not just wandering around the pool with your kids and playing splash. Swimming is hard work, but 400 cals is awesome. That is an awesome site for telling you all kinds of activities that take your weight into account, BIG difference in what i burn at 267 versus the average 150 pounder.
