Runner's Knee

So apparently I have this condition. It makes sense- the problem started after I spent a day running downhill. It doesn't hurt too much, but it's quite icky (my knee clicks whenever I go upstairs- ew!).

Does anyone have any experience with this? Advice? I have to rest it, so no running/biking for me, which is enough to drive me insane!

Help:^:

I feel your pain! Literally ;)

I try to ice mine when I remember, do lots of stretching - hamstrings and quads. Most times my hamstrings feel nasty. I try to get some ITB stretching in there too and some massage.

I've also just started taking Glucosamine and lots of Omega 3s to see if that helps any.

When I get back to running (next week or the week after) I will be avoiding hills and starting out slowly on the treadmill.

Have you checked out some strengthening exercises on the net? I think there's some that recommend a "step-down" exercise where you move slowly and controlled down a small step.

HTH :)

Thanks for the link! I hate not being able to work out. My PT said to hold off knee-bending exercises and to focus on straight legged lifts (but I have to start doing it once the clicks go away. Again, ew). As the article recommended, my boyfriend takes Glucosamine and Chondroitin for joint helath (he has knee issues as well) and it has helped him.

It sucks because I knew when I was hiking that I was messing something up- I need to start listening to my body more.

I, too, have runner's knee. Besides icing, the best thing to do long-term is to strengthen the muscles around the knee. I also wear a knee support (the kind with the hole in it) to make sure my knee is stable when I run.
