Default Pedometers Revisited

I have two pedometers. One of them is the Omron that everyone loves on Amazon. I forget what the other is, but I think it is the same brand.

There is something I am not getting here. The pedometers don't start measuring when I start walking and they seem to measure only about every third step. They are consistent with each other. This makes me think there is "operator error" going on here.

I am going to google pedometers and get to the bottom of this, but if anyone knows of a good set of directions for measuring stride and setting these things up, I would like to know. The directions that came with the item are not clear to me at all.

Not having the pedometer work like it should makes my OCD kick in and I fret about the pedometer instead of walking...not good. LOL. You know I wouldn't be complaining if the thing gave out too many steps...
