stretch marks / generic Mederma?

Hello, all,

I've read some of your comments about Mederma and have come to the conclusion that it sometimes helps and sometimes doesn't. My question is for those who have noticed an improvement. Have any of you tried to store brands that are Mederma rip-offs? Do they work as well, or at all?

The Wal-Mart brand is half the price of the real thing. I'm a poor grad student so I'd rather save my money. (With this many stretch marks, I'll be buying a ton of tubes!)

Any other advice would be appreciated. I just get so upset sometimes that even when I am at my goal weight, I'll have these reminders that I was once obese. *sigh*

My dermatologist suggested it for a scar, and he said the generic store brands are equally effective. Read the box and make sure the ingredients are the same. I'd suggest trying it out on one area, since it can take several months of twice daily use before you see any improvement. Make sure it works for you before you invest in enough for the rest of your body.

Good luck :)

Have you seen the "Weight Loss and Skin FAQ" sticky thread in Maintainers? Check it out...some good stuff there. ;)

Also - you need to be advised that if it works at all, Mederma (or generic Mederma) works best on new stretch marks (pink/reddish brown/dark brown marks). Once the marks are silvery/white, they're usually there for keeps (unless, of course, you have that portion of skin removed during plastic surgery). (this is according to Mederma's own FAQ on their website).
