Treadmill- Manual vs. Electric

Thoughts, suggestions? Im on a budget so I have been seriously considering a manual treadmill. I have read several of the pros and cons on other websites, but would like to hear what some of you all think. I dont want something fancy, I just need something to walk on. Not training for a marathon I just like to walk, but our area isnt the safest(traffic wise) to walk in.

I quickly sold the manual treadmill I once owned. Granted it was years ago and the quality may be better now. It actually ended up irritating my shins cause it took a lot of movement to get it going and to keep up the momentum. I have an electric one now.

We got rid of our manual and got an electric.As PhillyGirl1012 said,it took a lot of movement to keep up the momentum.I'd rather walk in the cold,snow,and rain before getting back on a manual one.Maybe the newer ones are better now,but try and get out to a few stores that have them and see if you can try them out...then you'll know if you like them or not.

I recommend electric. If you keep an eye on Craigslist, you should be able to pick one up fairly cheap. People get rid of them all the time. Another possibility is to call the local health clubs and ask if they ever sell of their equipment (they often do when they buy new units) and when. Health club equipment will be high mileage but it's usually top of the line and well maintained.

I would also opt for an electric one. They also have many added features such as heart monitor (very important when working on your cardio!), calories counter etc.

I had a manual for about a year and a half and just recently bought an electric treadmill for $300. I would NEVER go back to using a manual. One thing I like about having an electric treadmill is that it forces you to keep up your pace so you can maintain the movement better.

I would definitely look into your local classified ads. People are always looking to get rid of unused exercise equipment and you can probably barter them down $50-$100 from listed price.
