I've heard that birth control can cause weight gain. Is that true?

It depends on the birth control--some do, some don't. If you're talking about the pills, some may cause weight gain at first, but not forever, and certainly not much (a few pounds as your body adjusts). I have been on birth control pills since the week I turned 16 (as cyst prevention medication after having emergency surgery to remove 2 ovarian cysts), and I honestly don't think it's made a difference in my weight at all--I was overweight before them, and I'm able to lose weight even though I'm on them.

I've heard some horror stories about weight gain in relation to the Depo shots, though, but I can't say first hand, as I've always just used the pills (I HATE needles ).

As Jill said, some do and some don't. Ones that have low amount of estrogen and progesterone tend to have less issues with weight gain. I'd really discuss it with your doctor. I don't have a horror story to tell but I started a new pill at the beginning of this year and I gained 10 lbs from no where and it took me over 3 months for the scale to budge downward even 1 lb and that was with modifying my diet and exercise.

I have been on two different birth control pills and with both I gained for the first 3 months or so.......then was able to lose some but not all. I now have the NuvaRing (which is awesome) and haven't had any weight gain, and no problem losing........I also don't have to remember a pill everyday!! Yeah!! But that's just my experience......you really should talk to your doctor about all your options.
