Red face My Chronic Pain - Neuropathy

Hi Everyone! I'm new to 3FC and quickly found this group. A quick, where I am in my journey. Just got told that I need 6 month supervised diet program before my insurance will cover 50%. Feb. 27. 2013 is my first appt with the dietician.
My health problem is idiopathic neuropathy. i have it in my hands, up my arms, and feet, up my legs. It took me over 2 years for the doctors to listen to the "whining fat lady" and I was then passed off to pain management. I'm in severe pain and I'm on cymbalta, lyrica, Percocet every day, all 3 for nerve pain. I think I will still be able to get some weight off tho. I did gain 60 pounds when I couldn't go to curves anymore and then was put on the meds. If I do a strict diet, I do lose, I just can't stick to them anymore. I have dieted so much and failed so much that even having to do the 6 months for my insurance co. discouraged me at first.
I've been in physical therapy just to get me moving again. it's so hard to exercise when I'm in pain. he's had me doing the balance games on the Wii fit. sometimes it puts me down for a few days. I also bought me a stationary recumbent bike to ride.
I find I've healed a lot inside. I just need to get some weight off and change some bad habits. I'm scared I will fail at this too. I mean.. how many Mondays have I restarted my diet. after so many, all I do is fail.

Welcome to 3FC!

I am sorry for all of the painful things you are going through, I can't imagine how you feel.

I just wanted to chime in that I do a medically supervised diet and it's the best thing that ever happened to me. I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer last summer and my oncologist suggested weightloss surgery after I get my cancer issues taken care of. The medications I take actually cause weight gain and that's the last thing I needed (talk about an obstacle!) Long story short, I decided I couldn't handle all of the overwhelming information with all of the surgeries. I started the medically supervised diet and am learning to eat like a normal person (healthy, good, filling portions) and I am so excited. I couldn't have lost this weight without the help of my medical team, it's like a miracle to me.

I wish you lots of luck and hope you post here often. This sight is a great resource for support and encouraging words.

Hi Zephyrr! I also have Neuropathy, but it's Peripheral Neuropathy, but sounds like in the same areas as you have it. Do you find that the drugs are helping you at all? I've tried diff meds, treatments, but nothing has worked. I have Sjogren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disease and the neuropathy is a symptom of it. I understand the being on weight increasing meds very well!
And also going to the doctor for years telling them your pain and them saying "you need to lose weight, that's whats causing the pain" when all along it was actually a disease.
Keep telling yourself that you can do it. Being in constant pain has become a new way of life for me, but I just keep telling myself that I have to keep going. You'll do great!

I also have some issues with nerve pain, numbness, tingling, etc. that I experience on a daily basis, although no diagnosis for me yet. Still going through the frustrating phase of trying to figure out what it is!
If you don't mind me asking, did you see any kind of specialist to diagnose the problem? Or have any special testing done? It's been so frustrating to go to certain doctors and have them just brush it off as if it's not a big deal. To be honest, I feel like I've never been taken seriously due to my age, I'm college-aged, and have found that many doctors seem to think that I'm over-exaggerating my symptoms.

I've always wanted to lose weight but finally decided to get serious about it in hopes that it may help with my symptoms and overall becoming healthier.
Good luck with your weight loss journey!
