Now, this is very controversial, but, it would be worth your time to read the book "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Dr. Malcolm Kendrick. I got it off Amazon.com. Basically, the biggest problem causing heart disease is too many simple carbs, not cholesterol. LDL is not even a measure of cholesterol and our bodies NEED cholesterol to function properly. Lots of biochemistry in the book as well as results of studies done for decades that show cholesterol and saturated fats to not be the problem. In fact, many studies show that as cholesterol levels in the body are decreased, the risk for heart attack and stroke increase.
We started researching this when my DH had elevated 'cholesterol' and was put on simvastatin. He started having severe body pain which did not go away until he went off the statin. Now, we don't worry about cholesterol or fats, but are trying to cut our simple sugar intake, along with processed foods. He just feels better, also.
