Unhappy anyone get their tonsills out as an adult?

I had mine removed 48 hours ago. I can't take a full dose of the pain meds because it makes me barf, even with the nausea meds they prescribed with it. My ears, neck, throat and tongue all hurt. I am 29 years old.
Have any of you done this as an adult? when does the pain get more tolerable? I just want bread, lol. Chewing even hurts though.

Oh, I'm so sorry you're hurting!! Could you call the doctor to get a stronger anti-nausea med? Most pain medication makes me sick too, especially demerol and vicoden, so I almost always have to have something to control the nausea, usually phenegrin (sp?).

Try to sleep as much as you can and see if you can gently sip some cool water. I had my tonsils out in the 4th grade, but I distinctly remember the pain. I ate a lot of ice cream and popsicles.

Thanks girl! I'm on lortab, a variant of vicodin and also have phenergan. I'm taking half doses of lortab along with full doses of the nausea stuff--it's taking the edge off the pain, but swallowing is truly awful right now. Thanks for the sweet words. I had to get them out because I got strep throat 3 times since September...

A word to the wise, my husband and I both have had our tonsils out, and while I don't get it often, we still get strep throat. My husband gets it at least once or twice a year, and I had a severe case last year. It was so bad that the doctors thought I had mono! The doctor I had last year wrote me off, saying I couldn't have strep because I didn't have tonsils, but another doctor told me that's a common misconception. You CAN get strep without tonsils. It's a bacterial infection in the throat, not only the tonsils.

I had mine out because of recurrent tonsillitis. They were swelling so badly I couldn't swallow liquids without horrendous pain, and it was flaring up 3 or 4 times a month. I missed a loooot of school because of it. Once they were out, I got sore throats maybe once or twice a year. I hope you get better very soon! You should start feeling better in a couple of days. I was able to eat some of my birthday cake 3 days after my surgery. (Yep, had mine out right before my 10th birthday)

I would call your doc and ask for a LIQUID pain killer. I had my tonsils out when I was about 15 and they gave me tylonol with codeine and it worked well with no nausea. I remember drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast for about 3 or 4 days along with ice cream, yogurt, pudding, pureed soups. I started solids around day 4 or 5 but it had to be very soft so i could just kind of mush it around in my mouth and swallow. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks guys--the lortab I'm on now is liquid, so that is a blessing, so is the nausea meds. I ate cake today (Whee!) and it was pretty soft, but chewing just wears me out, lol. I am craving bread like a monster, but the thought of swallowing it makes me cringe, so I'll wait a few more days.
@Pint--yeah, they warned me it is still possible to get strep. I teach special education pre-k, so I know I can still get it. Hopefully, it won't be as often or as severe as it used to be. Thanks for the tips guys. It is helping distract from the pain! I'm also taking alieve liquidgels with the lortab--it helps too.

Just wondering if you are also getting tylenol (acetominophen) or advil (ibuprofen) with the narcotic. They can work better when paired with narcs, so it is worth it, and the tylenol especially doesn't cause stomach upset.
It can be liquid form too, (the kids kind especially) or even suppositories so you don't have to swallow. Hope you feel better soon.

Had my tonsils out as an adult and yes ... it does hurt A LOT! Hang in there and think about tomorrow. It will get better, for sure.

If the pain gets worse or if you have a fever, call the doc. I got a throat infection about a week after my surgery. I was actually grateful to get the penicillin in a shot :-) Didn't have to swallow anything more.

I'm on day 7 out of post op. Pain is effing miserable, and the lortab doesn't do anything except make me queasy. today I'm trying to get by with just tylenol. I called the dr. on day 5, and she said the pain was normal. She also said it would peak on day 7 (yay!) as throat scabs fell off. I had been trying semi soft foods like scrambled eggs, soft bread, but today I'm sticking with sorbet, yogurt, etc.

:hug Seventh day is definitely the worst. I had my tonsils out in March of 2010. I was twenty and it hurt like a biatch. Just hang in there. In about a week or two, you'll forget you even had the surgery.

Thanks iHeartu! It doesn't help that my tummy hates me for all the crappy soft food I've been giving it, lol. I'm gonna try to sleep through today...
