Fatty liver?

  • I got back the results from my health check for work and the blood tests for the liver were a little high. So, I went to the doctor and had them done again and they were still a little high. My doctor tells me I have fatty liver. My levels aren't too high, so it's not much to worry about. I understand what I have to do: eat healthy, exercise and lose some weight.

But I was wondering if fatty liver can cause tiredness/weight gain? The reason I ask is since last fall I have slowly been gaining weight without much change of my life style, I went from about 135 to 155, so a gain of 20 pounds (wow, that's the first time I've really realized that... so sad). I've been slowly gaining weight and so tired all the time... No energy to do basic things such as cleaning, etc.

I wish I knew my doctor better... I need to find a different doctor that answers my questions better. I just wanted to check here and see if anyone knows about this/has experience.
  • I would think the tiredness is a result of the excess body weight rather than the fatty liver. But a fatty liver isn't good for you as you know. I have it too, but also with liver enzymes that are a little high. I'm no doctor, but it sounds like losing the weight would help both problems!
  • Thanks! I think losing weight will help with my tiredness and fatty liver.
  • The American Liver Foundation has a pretty good fact sheet about fatty liver that explains what it is, how it caused/diagnosed/treated. Here is a link if you would like to check it out.

I have fatty liver as well, with the same slightly elevated levels. My doctor is sending me to a specialist to confirm. I've also gained about 10 lbs in the past year; fatty liver can contribute to metabolic syndrome, its kind of a vicious circle. Just the smallest amount of exercise can help. I bought a Wii Fit and am starting to exercise at home, we'll see if I can keep it up. I don't like the gym because there are too many skinny people and I always feel like they are looking at me, even if I know they aren't.

My doctor tells me that fatty liver can go away on its own with just modification of diet and exercise, no drugs are absolutely necessary when you are at the lower levels. We discussed Matformin (sp) but he's only going to give it to me once the diagnosis is confirmed with the specialist. Plus he said that the effects of Matformin are exponential when combined with diet & exercise.

Hope that helps, feel free to PM me, I'd love to know how you are handling it.
