Default Reducing insulin - how fast?

Hi all.

I started the Ideal Protein plan on March 1 of this year. Previous to that I was taking 35 IU of Lantis nightly and still getting FBS around 7.3. Of course that's all changed since I've dropped carbs so substantially.

Now that I'm a week and a half in it's like I can't titrate down quickly enough. I took 17 units last night (after taking 20 the night before) and my FBS was 3.8 this morning - too low for me. And because it's long lasting it continues to keep me hypo for most of the day as well.

So - for those of you that have decreased your insulin over time, how did you do it? Did anyone end up going off of insulin altogether rather quickly? I can't keep going hypo - it's not a pleasant feeling AND it means I have to eat more carbs which kinda negates the whole diet thing. Gah!

Any advice/been theres would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

DIva Jen: have you talked with your diabetic educator or doctor? You should consider a dose that takes carbs into account, only those you are eating. Or save your carbs for evening to help. Its great that you can reduce your insulin so much, thats great.

Yep, but I'm a weird holding pattern with them all. Can't get in to see my GP for almost two weeks (sigh) so they've referred me to the pharmacists that work with their team. Which was great - she gave me good advice to start - then she went on vacation and isn't back for a week. So I'm back to square one again.

Hi IPdivajen,
I was to n Lantus 35 units and Metfrmin 500 twice a day. I believe I titrated my Lantus down to nothing in a week and stopped Metformin before day 10. Check your BS frequently, and it is safer to be a little high than a little low. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that, that helps for sure. I'm down to 14 this morning and still am at 4.8. Better, but still lowish. I'd definitely rather be a bit on the higher side than low - low means I have to consume carbs! And we don't want that!
