Hello ladies!

Meowee: Good luck on your upcoming procedure. I've never had that done, but have heard it can be stressful. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Thanks to everyone with their breakfast ideas. Here is the problem for me: My doc says no more than 50 grams of carbs per meal. I checked out the oatmeal label and see that 1/2 cup is right around 30. I like the original without anything on it. And if I only did 1/2 cup, I would definitely need something else with it, and fruit would probably put me over the limit. I'll keep working on it, and thank you again for all your suggestions.

I was home with my son today. He was running a 102 degree fever this morning. So, I finished up a baby quilt, made a hat and did a little cross-stitch. I also cooked a great dinner--blackened cornish game hens, mixed veggies with edamame.

I slightly blew it today, and this is the first day that happened. I had some cereal and then a sugar free ice cream treat. I probably shouldn't have, but compared to what I used to eat, it was a healthy "blowing it". I'll do better tomorrow. I'm bad when I am home and bored.

Well, I better scoot and take care of my buddy. Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning, gang . . .

ROSEY . . . . . . Wow, your meltdown sounds absolutely delicious, but I fear you are right that it had a higher impact on your BGL than mine did. Oh well, we'll both get back on track and keep looking forward and downward.

CHACHEE . . . . . . Have you had an appointment with a dietician or diabetes education specialist yet? IMHO . . . (a) I think your doctor probably means NET CARBS (Carbs less Fibre) which is what the CDA and ADA guidelines indicate, and (b) I also think the 1/2 cup on the rolled oats package means dry measure. My bag says . . . 1/2 cup (dry) has 27 grams carb, and 4 grams fibre for a Net of 23 grams; leaving lots of room for some fruit. When you cook that 1/2 cup with 1 cup of water it doubles in bulk and, with or without the fruit, I find it pretty filling and we are about the same weight.

GLEN . . . . . . You are probably right about what Caitlyn meant by doughnuts. Naturally, my fat little self automatically thought of the kind you eat.

Well, this was my WWI morning . . . and two of those three pounds I was raving about being gone last week are now back again. BOO . . . HISS Oh well, it's probably a lot of WWW and will soon go again, I hope. My average calories for the week were about 200 per day over the week before, but even at a total of 1400 too many, that does not equate to a 2 pound gain. The human body is such a fun thing to deal with. Hey, nowhere to go but down.

Have a great moving and shaking day, gang. Keep doing as much of the good stuff as you possibly can and the rewards will surely follow. See you soon.

Just checking in. The weather is still gray and kind of rainy looking. I would much rather have snow than this gray stuff. At least it can look pretty! I feel really sick this morning from my Byetta. I forgot to take my morning bg ...duh!

Not much is happening around here. Tom is working on updating his resume, I spent some time this morning playing with the grandbaby. I need to go to the store.

Have a great day everyone!

Glen and meowee........I meant the doughnuts you do, when you spin your car around on the ice and let the wheels spin. he he
I don't eat sugar as it makes my eyes blurry.

cachee....hoping your lil one is over that virus real soon. What kind of baby quilt are you making? I need to make a baby gift for a baby shower next month.
I keep my carbs at 25 per day. It sure puts a damper on a gals pig outs.

rosey...I would be nervous if my husband might have to have back surgery Has he ever tried wearing one of those waist thingies on his waist? It's like a big velcro belt.

I weigh about once a month now. I go by how my clothes fit more than anythang. I have lost over 100 and want to loose 100 more. I hope 2007 finds me at goal. But I figure if it don't ,then life is like a box of chocolates, cause not one of us knows exatly what we are gonna get.

Hi gang . . .

Sorry but I'm afraid I only have time for a quick HELLO, too. Been on the run all day and things will remain fairly hectic this evening as well. Then I have to get to bed early so I can be up long before the crack of dawn to get to the hospital for 6:30 am - talk about a ridiculous hour for surgery - oh well, hopefully that means I'll get home again early, too.

And of course, the weather is absolutely beautifully calm and sunny today; and of course, the weather is forecast to be beautifully calm and sunny on Saturday. Tomorrow . . . windy and 4 to 6 inches of snow . . . doesn't it just figure.

Don't imagine I'll be on-line tomorrow and maybe not for the weekend either, but I will be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, everybody, just keep on moving and shaking

Hey y'all,

It's Thursday... one more day and the weekend is here...

how was your day? We had sunshine here... nip in the air but the sun out- that was a blessing. When we mentioned being able to go outside for recess, the kids cheered... we haven't been out all week with the rain. Kelli, the teacher I work with was out today. She's had a sick child and been sick herself this week... when it comes to subs, I end up teaching the class and the sub works with Madison... it's easier because I know the routine, how things are done etc... Madison cried at first this morning... but she settled down to normal!

This evening, Theresa stopped by when she got off work and we went for a walk before she headed home... my tummy is not happy at all with me right now... I sure am ready to find out what's going on...according to the nurse, my HIDA scan was normal from last week... and I sure figured I had gallstones from my system...

It's Thankful Thursday:

I'm thankful for:
the Son
the sunshine
laughter of kids
hugs from kids
friends
family
each of you

What are you thankful for?

Here is an article I read and wondering what you all think.

Quote:
What if the American Heart Association endorsed the trans-fat diet? Problem, right? Look at what the American Diabetes Association is spoon-feeding people with diabetes: sugar. Not to worry: We've got the solution right here.
By Adam Campbell, Men's Health

Walking Out Cured

It's a wonder no one has tried to have Mary Vernon's medical license revoked.

Since 1999, the 52-year-old family doctor has been treating diabetic patients in Lawrence, Kan., with an approach that was abandoned by most physicians in the 1930s. Worse, this Depression-era remedy is the opposite of the current guidelines established by the American Diabetes Association, a nonprofit organization that spent nearly $51 million on research in 2005, and so should know a thing or two about how to handle diabetes.

There's no question that Dr. Vernon is trouble—but for whom? Not her patients, that's for certain. They just won't stay sick. People walk into her office afflicted with type-2 diabetes and, by every objective medical measurement, walk out cured. There's $51 million that says that isn't supposed to happen, not in a clinic in Kansas, and definitely not as a result of cleaning out the refrigerator.

"My first line of treatment is to have patients remove carbohydrates from their diets," explains Dr. Vernon, a petite, energetic mother of two who also serves as the president of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. "This is often all it takes to reverse their symptoms, so that they no longer require medication."

That's it?

That's it—a simple strategy, but one that's controversial. If Dr. Vernon and a growing cadre of researchers are correct about carbohydrates, we may be looking at an epic case of ignorance on the part of the medical community. That, however, pales next to the implications for the American Diabetes Association, namely that the very organization dedicated to conquering diabetes is rejecting what could be the closest thing we have to a cure.

A Diabetic Epidemic

Although not an infectious disease, diabetes seems to be spreading like one. Since 1980, its prevalence in the United States has risen by 47 percent, a trend that's expected to take a space-shuttle trajectory in the next decade. That's because nearly half of American men today either have the condition or are on the verge of developing it, according to a new report from the National Institutes of Health. And the consequences are considerable: Diabetes is the primary cause of cardiovascular disease, slashing a man's life span by an average of 13 years. Dodge early death and you could still end up impotent, blind, in kidney failure, or, most likely, minus a foot. (A gangrenous limb or digit is amputated every six minutes in the United States.)

"This is a 'grab your muskets, fellas, the wolves are at the door' scenario," says David Katz, M.D., an associate professor of public health at Yale University school of medicine. "What once was 'adult-onset' diabetes—a condition mostly of overweight, sedentary, middle-aged adults—is now an epidemic in children under the age of 10."

So what exactly is diabetes? In freshman-biology terms, it's a disease of the hormone insulin. Secreted by your pancreas, insulin moves glucose—the form of sugar your body uses for energy—from your bloodstream into your cells. Problems arise, however, when, often due to excessive weight gain, your cells start to become resistant to the effects of insulin. (It knocks, no one answers.) As a result, more insulin is required to dispose of the same amount of glucose. (The knock becomes a loud banging.) This condition, called insulin resistance, is the first stage of type-2 diabetes.

As insulin resistance worsens over time, your pancreas has to pump out enormous amounts of insulin to force glucose into your cells. (Hey, let's use a sledgehammer!) Eventually, your pancreas has trouble keeping up, leaving you with chronic high blood sugar, a.k.a. hyperglycemia—the defining marker of diabetes and the root cause of the calamities that arise from it. Alas, it only gets worse from here: If the resistance continues to mount, some of the insulin-producing beta cells inside your pancreas can "burn out" and stop working altogether. (In type-1 diabetes, an autoimmune disorder destroys most or all of the beta cells.) Once beta cells burn out, you're looking at a lifetime of daily insulin injections.

Or not, if you believe Dr. Vernon.

Hi Rosey, Thanks for the info. 75mg of carbs is pretty low .......I think about what most people on Atkins would consider a maintainance level.......probably a lot lower than most people. My son is moving to Anchorage March 5th so we will probably be there to visit someday. He works for the Army Corps of Engineers. We have 10 kids and they are getting farther away. I don't like flying but it has become a must in this family. ha! I would like to learn more about the diet of people with diabetes. My mom who was thin was sure I would get it someday. I am 57 and don't have it yet but would like to avoid it if possible.
