Unhappy Mission Impossible?

Has anyone else experienced weight gain because of antidepressants? I've been taking Prozac for 6 years and gained 50 pounds - and without changing my diet or exercise (honest). I feel like it is impossible to lose weight -- which I am considering doing just to avoid gaining any more weight. So frustrated!

Maybe you should talk to your doctor about changing medications? If the anti-depressants are working, they should give you enough of a lift to enable you to exercise a little every day and that might combat the weight gain.

Thanks neon zephyr. I did talk to my doctor and he switched me to a medication that I had a terrible reaction to. When I called to tell him this, he said I don't know what to tell you....and so I am now back on the original medication.

lucydear, I was on Prozac for 4 months and gained 40lbs!! I was reduced to wearing yoga pants 24/7 because they were the only thing that fit!! I LOVED Prozac, never felt better, but I could not bear to see the 42lbs. I had lost and was maintaining, come back. If your doctor "doesn't know what to tell you", go see a specialist. I had been on all different anti depressant anti anxiety meds since I was 13 (I'm now 25) prescribed by my family doctor and it was always a medication rollercoaster. After going to see a specialist I was put on a mood stabilizer and, Wah laa!! Perfection!!Maybe get a referral from your doctor or use Google to find a specialist in the area if your doctor isn't helping. I am now medication free for the first time since I was 13 and I understand your stuggle, but I'm STILL trying to lose this Prozac weight!!! Good luck!!!

Thank you for your reply Vixxi! It's so good to hear that someone else understands. The prozac weight is making me NUTS - it will not come off no matter how hard I work out or how intensely I diet. I know some people say that antidepressants are weight neutral, but that has not been my experience at all! I am going to take your advice and try to find a new doctor (I am seeing a specialist, but he hasn't been particularly helpful). My ultimate goal is also to be medication free as well and I'd like to find a doc. that will work with me to get there.
